Conrad Laurel r Famous North Carolinian Conrad Laurel African-American Police Offi cers African-American Police Offi cers Athlete, Educator, One of Greensboro's First Athlete, Educator, One of Greensboro's First He was born on December 27, 1907 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He passed away on May 20, 2002 at the age of 95. He was one of Greensboro's fi rst African-American Police Offi cers. It was 1946 and Raiford was one of only six black men recruited by a then all white Greensboro Police Department. Although a tall and muscular man was proud to be a pioneering member of law enforcement he resented the way he and his fellow black offi cers were treated. Greensboro was then one of the more populated incorporated areas in the Tarheel state. The black offi cers were not allowed to arrest anyone outside their ethnicity. They were treated as second class citizens. Offi cers had to patrol areas with "colored police" billboarded on their cars. Life for America's fi rst black police offi cers was not easy. For Raiford, the tension and humiliation became too much to bear. After fi ve years, he resigned and became a teacher. He continued to improve the lives of those disenfranchised by Jim Crow. During the heart of the Great Depression, he played semi-pro baseball in the then called Negro Leagues. He went on to become a human rights activist, a Greensboro City Council member, Commissioner of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department the North Carolina Goodwill Ambassador for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West German. He became one of Greensboro's fi rst African- American certifi ed lifeguards. He was also a champion swimmer. He volunteered in World War II, and was a key player during the civil rights movement. In 2002, the Governor of North Carolina praised his ground-breaking contributions to human rights and international goodwill. Did Realize...ealize... Raifori Ra ford Brandon Fisher: Yes. My sister Kylie always goes to the games. I now go occa- sionally. We cheer for East Rutherford. Angela Garner: Yes, we definitely do. We're die hard fans and go to all the games. I really enjoy it. David Terry: No. We don't anymore because we're always working. We just don't seen to have the time to go. Did T N Wd ' Brad Ellenberger: I used to go all the time when my daughter was still in school. Since she graduated, I don't get there so often. Phil Shires: I have gone in the past. I've always enjoyed the games. I always pull for East but I haven't been to a game yet this year. Gary Greene: Mine is seafood! All kinds of fried seafood. I just love it all. I also take kindly to those hushpuppies!
