Cornwallis Charles Cornwallis, one of the lead-
ing British Generals during the Ameri- can Revolutionary War and also a co- lonial governor, stopped in Fayetteville with his army in April 1781. He was marching on to Wilmington after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse near Greensboro, NC and he stayed the night in a house on Yadkin Road.
Some historians believe that Corn-
wallis first came into the area by marching almost due south near what is now McCormick Road and Ramsey Street to a campsite in downtown Fay- etteville, between Blount and Cross Creeks, thus occupying the then-po- litically divided village of Cross Creek.
Cornwallis's troops are said to have
spent much of the next day foraging mostly unsuccessfully to find food, though some historians believe there was also a skirmish with a local mili- tia group near modern day Morganton Road, with several casualties on each side.
The following day Cornwallis' troops
commenced marching towards Wilm- ington, perhaps stopping for the night near Gray's Creek.
