A: Stress occurs when people feel like they don't have the tools to manage all of the demands in their lives. It can be short-term or long-term. Missing the bus or arguing with your spouse or partner can cause short-term stress. Money problems or trouble at work can cause long-term stress. Even happy events, like having a baby or getting married can cause stress. Some of the most common stressful life events include: death of a spouse, death of a close family member, divorce, losing your job, major personal illness or injury, marital separation, marriage and pregnancy. Q: What are some common signs of stress? A: Everyone responds to stress a little differently. Here are some of the signs to look for: not eating, eating too much, feeling like you have no control, needing to have too much control, forgetfulness, headaches, lack of energy, lack of focus, trouble getting things done, poor self-esteem, short temper, trouble sleeping, upset stomach, back pain, general aches and pains Q: Do women react to stress differently than men? A: Women often cope with stress in different ways than men do. Women "tend and befriend," taking care of those closest to them, but also drawing support from friends and family. Men are more likely to have the " ght or ight" response. They cope by "escaping" into a relaxing activity or other distraction. Q: How can I better manage my stress? A: Try these tips to keep stress in check: • Become a problem solver. Make a list of the things that cause you stress. Figure out which problems you can solve now and which are beyond your control for the moment. From your list of problems you can solve now, start with the little ones. Learn how to calmly look at a problem, think of possible solutions, and take action. • Be exible. Sometimes, it's not worth the stress to argue. Give in now and then meet people halfway. • Relax. Take deep breaths. Stretch. Massage tight muscles. Take time to read a book, listen to music, or go to a movie. • Talk with your doctor. If you are having trouble coping with your stress levels, see your doctor, who may suggest counseling to help you learn better ways to deal with stress. Your doctor may also prescribe medications to help you through a particularly stressful time. • Help others. Volunteering in your community can help you make new friends and feel better about yourself. -Source: US Dept. of Health & Human Services' Of ce on Women's Health ©Community First Media Paid for by the Committee to Elect Brandon Gosey They're lots of people hurting in today's economy. Jobs are scarce and costs continue to rise. It's extremely important that our public education system fully prepare our students to attend college or the workforce. A high school diploma must mean opportunity and it must serve as the foundation and launching pad to become a productive member of society after high school. In my current position as the "Adult High School Coordinator" at Isothermal Community College, I see adults coming back to school on a daily basis to obtain their high school diploma. Rutherford County Schools must do whatever it takes to ensure that your child becomes a graduate and not a dropout while moving all students in a positive direction towards college or employment. It has been said that "education is the most powerful weapon which one can use to change the world." The citizens of Rutherford County deserve a change and it starts with empowering our public education system. As your school board candidate, I am committed to make it my personal mission to help increase test scores, reduce the high school dropout rate and ensure that every penny spent advances the mission of Rutherford County Schools. I am asking you to please vote Brandon Gosey for Rutherford County Schools Board of Education District 2 on November 4th and together we can move forward with a parent's desires and an educator's understanding! A MESSAGE TO THE VOTERS "Moving forward with a parent's desires and an educator's understanding" Elect Brandon Gosey Board of Education Construction worker, Amilcar, points to the sign on the new Friendship Building in Forest City.
