Sometimes Home, Sweet Home, can seem more like a money pit. But your house doesn't have to cost you tons for upkeep when you use your ingenuity, creativ- ity, shopping sense and savings sense to bring out the best with- out breaking the bank Enjoy these sensible tips for making your house a wonderful home, with time and money to spare. DRY ERASE BOARD. Clean it with a dab of toothpaste on a clean, damp cloth. The board will be beautifully clean and minty fresh as well. And no more ghosting. MAKE YOUR OWN. Extra pillowcases can be pricey, so consider making your own: When you buy your next set of sheets, buy an additional flat queen- sized sheet match (indi- vidual sheets are readily available online), regard- less of the matching set. Out of the queen flat sheet, you can make three pairs of matching pillowcases for a fraction of the cost of buying them ready made. By measuring a commer- cially made pillowcase, it is easy to create a usable pattern. MORE FOR LESS. If you prefer the square facial tis- sue boxes but hate pay- ing more for fewer tissues (they really do have about half of the quantity of the regular box of tissues), re- use an empty square tissue box by carefully opening one side. Remove about half of the tissues from a regular-sized box. Fold the stack in half and insert it into the square box fold facing up so you can pull out the tissue through the box's top opening. Tape the side shut until the next refill. VASE VALUE. The next time you empty a salad dressing bottle, clean it up and re- move the label. Most are the per- fect shape to hold a small bouquet of flowers. It will be larger than a bud vase and perfect for when you want to display just a few flowers. Tie a ribbon around the screw threads and no one will be the wiser. BAG THE SHEETS. Store your sheet sets in- side their matching pil- lowcases. Tuck the folded sheets and one pillowcase inside the other case for tidy stacking in the linen closet. No more search- ing for the flat sheet that matches the fitted one you want to use. Everything is neatly tucked inside of its own "bag." CURTAIN TIE BACK. If you like the simplic- ity and look of curtain "holdbacks" (the decora- tive hardware that holds curtains to one side) you might be shocked when the least expensive set you find is $12 a pair. Instead, buy the screw hooks that are used to hang a bicy- cle (only a couple of bucks for a package of two at Lowe's) and are the same size as holdbacks. These steel hooks are vinyl coated and come in a vari- ety of bright colors — the perfect custom holdbacks that match a child's room, bathroom or kitchen. You can use hot glue to attach decorative items such as shells, ribbons or but- tons — anything to bring in the decor and theme of the room. Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary? CALENDAR Tehama County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board, in partnership with Tehama County Health Services Agency, Tehama County Department of Education, Red Bluff and Corning schools, Red Bluff Interiors and other busi- nesses, will be releasing 2014 environmentally- safe red balloons Mon- day in honor of Red Rib- bon Week. Preparation for the Red Ribbon Balloon launch will take place at 11:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27. Balloons will be distributed and re- leased promptly at noon from the Red Bluff Post Office at 447 Walnut St. to the corner of Main and Walnut streets and south along Main Street to the corner of Main Street and Antelope Boulevard and in Corning at Tehama County Health Services Agency, 275 Solano St. Red Ribbon Week is one of the oldest and larg- est drug prevention cam- paigns in the country. It was started to commem- orate DEA Special Agent Enriqe Kiki Camarena. In 1985, he died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mex- ico while fighting the bat- tle against illegal drugs. His goal was to keep our country and children safe. By wearing a red ribbon during the last week of Oc- tober, Americans can dem- onstrate their ardent oppo- sition to illegal drugs. So, help show your support by remembering to wear red ribbons all week. The first national Red Ribbon Week was pro- claimed by the US Con- gress in 1988 and is cele- brated nation-wide during the last week of October. This national event has come to be a reminder of Kiki and so many oth- ers who have given their lives fighting illegal drug trades. It has also become a symbol of support for the DEA's efforts to reduce de- mand for drugs through prevention and education programs. For information, call De- nise Norwood at (530) 527- 7893. RED RIBBON WEEK Ba ll oo n la un ch s et f or l at er t hi s mo nt h The San Jose Mer- cury News and other Bay Area newspapers recently alerted subscribers about a scam that seeks to swindle people out of hundreds of dollars by sending out fake billing notices. The publications tar- geted include the San Jose Mercury News, Oakland Tribune, Contra Costa Times and Marin Inde- pendent Journal, said Dan Smith, vice president of au- dience with the Bay Area Newspaper Group. There are no reports of the scam in Tehama County or the surround- ing area, but it has been re- ported in White City, Ore. and Henderson and Reno, Nev. "It has just hit our mar- ket locally, within the last day or two," Smith said re- cently. "I have never seen a scam quite like this. They are sending out bills at ran- dom to subscribers and nonsubscribers." "Newspapers across the country have been im- pacted, from San Jose, to St. Louis, to the Washing- ton Post," said John Mur- ray, vice president of audi- ence development with the Newspaper Association of America. In the Bay Area outfits operating under names like Associated Publish- ers Network, United Pub- lishers Network, Platinum Subscription Services and Publishers Billing Asso- ciates are mailing bogus bills asking subscribers to pay $200 for a six-month subscription or $400 for a one-year subscription, Smith said. "This amounts to mail fraud," Smith said. If you receive a suspi- cious bill, call the Daily News Circulation Depart- ment at 527-2151, Ext. 125.
