ByBradyMccombs The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY The Mor- mon church is address- ing the mystery that has long surrounded undergar- ments worn by its faithful with a new video explaining the practice in-depth while admonishing ridicule from outsiders about what it con- siders a symbol of Latter- day Saints' devotion to God. The four-minute video on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' web- site compares the white, two-piece cotton "tem- ple garments" to holy vest- ments worn in other reli- gious faiths such as a Cath- olic nun's habit or a Muslim skullcap. The footage is part of a re- cent effort by the Salt Lake City-based religion to ex- plain, expand or clarify on some of the faith's more sen- sitive beliefs. Articles posted on the church's website in the past two years have ad- dressed the faith's past ban on black men in the lay clergy; its early history of polygamy; and the miscon- ception that members are taught they'll get their own planet in the afterlife. The latest video dispels the notion that Latter-day Saints believe temple gar- ments have special protec- tive powers, a stereotype perpetuated on the Inter- net and in popular culture by those who refer to the sa- cred clothing as "magical Mormon underwear." "These words are not only inaccurate but also of- fensive to members," the video says. "There is noth- ing magical or mystical about temple garments, and church members ask for the same degree of respect and sensitivity that would be af- forded to any other faith by people of goodwill." The video and accompa- nying article feature more detailed information about the garments than has ever before been released to the public, Mormon scholars say. It was made to fill a void on the Internet, which has little, if any, accurate infor- mation about the under- garments, church spokes- man Eric Hawkins said in a statement. The video, also available on YouTube, explains that the undergarments are worn daily by devout adult Latter-day Saints as a re- minder of their commit- ment to God to live good, honorable lives. The garments, which re- semble a T-shirt and shorts, are shown laid out on a ta- ble in what marks a rare public glimpse at clothing that normally is hidden from outsiders. Members are taught not to hang the garments in public places to dry or display them in view of people "who do not un- derstand their significance." The video comes two years after jabs about the undergarments were lobbed at Mitt Romney in 2012 with the intent to dam- age his candidacy as the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major politi- cal party. The Associated Press SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, QUEBEC A young convert to Islam who killed a Ca- nadian soldier in a hit-and- run had been on the radar of federal investigators, who feared he had jihadist ambitions and had seized his passport, authorities said Tuesday. The suspect was shot dead by police after a chase in the Quebec city of Saint- Jean-Sur-Richelieu. A sec- ond soldier suffered minor injuries in Monday's attack. Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney said the at- tack "clearly linked to ter- rorist ideology." Quebec Police spokesman Guy Lapointe said the act was deliberate and that one of the two soldiers was in uni- form. An official identified the suspect as Martin Couture- Rouleau, 25.
