NC Veterans Park The significance of the North Carolina Veterans Park is addressed in the guiding vision behind the park's design, which states: "From the soils of North Carolina, you left your families and homes with purpose to serve your country. The people of North Carolina honor your service and welcome you home." The vision for the North Carolina Veterans Park included specific planning goals relative to place-making and community building: • An investment to catalyze additional downtown redevelopment • Enhance an important downtown gateway corridor • Improve visual, pedestrian and vehicular connectivity between the downtown, Fayetteville State University and residential neighborhoods • Create a campus to connect existing facilities, including the Airborne and Special Operations Museum and Freedom Memorial Park • Showcase public art as a key design element The park is appropriately married to its surroundings, providing a seamless extension of existing facilities and linking other critical elements through the gateway to the greater downtown area. The Marvin Collins Outstanding Awards Program is named in honor of the late Marvin Collins, a former Planning Director for Orange County, North Carolina, who developed the idea for the program in 1975. He received a Professional Achievement Award from the APA-NC just prior to his death in 1998. For the 25th anniversary of the awards program, the APA-NC Executive Committee recognized Collins' service to the chapter by adding his name to the awards program. Veterans and all citizens are invited to visit the park for a Veterans Day ceremony, which will be held following the Saturday, Nov. 8 Veterans Day parade (10 to 11:30 a.m.) in downtown Fayetteville. The ceremony is scheduled for approximately 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. and admission is free.
