18 UCW OCTOBER 15-21, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CUMBERLAND In order to bring awareness to the devastation families suffer from domestic violence, the Cumberland County Sheriff 's Office and community partners will honor victims killed through domestic violence at the "Remember My Name" memorial vigil on Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the front courtyard of the Cumberland County Courthouse, 117 Dick St. The North Carolina Department of Justice reports that 108 women, men and children across the state lost their lives due to domestic violence-related homicides in 2013. The memorial vigil is part of an effort to bring more awareness to domestic violence issues. To further support domestic violence victims, Sheriff 's Office employees are conducting an internal collection drive during October for items to donate to the Cumberland County Department of Social Services CARE Center's Safe House. The CARE Center provides a supportive environment and comprehensive services to women and their children experiencing intra-family violence. The CARE Center needs personal hygiene and baby items, as well as jackets and outerwear for children and women. Citizens who would like to donate items may call 677-2532 for more information. co.cumberland.nc.us Domestic Violence Vigil Oct. 23 4-H Member Serves As Youth Delegate Cumberland County 4-H Youth Volunteer Jenna Shackelford served as a Youth Voice Delegate for Cumberland County at the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Conference held in August in Buncombe County. Shackelford was recognized by the Board of Commissioners at their regular meting Sept. 15 in the Courthouse. Shackelford recently graduated with honors from her homeschool, Lake Clair Academy. She has been active in 4-H for the past 11 years and has participated in livestock showing, gun safety and public speaking. She has also learned about local and state government through Citizenship Focus. Shackelford is currently a student at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Friends of the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center will present author Mark Smith-Soto Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. The event is free and open to the public. Smith-Soto, a professor emeritus at UNC- Greensboro, will talk about the relevance of poetry in the contemporary world as he reads selections from his poetry books. Smith-Soto's books include Green Mango Collage, Shafts, Our Lives are Rivers and Any Second Now.
