Johnny Vermin Comic | by John Champlin A RETRO WORD From Our Sponsors July 20, 1937 Many recall the Bresee's Health Bar as a restaurant within the department store. However, a small new department opened Feb. 25 that year, special- izing in New York state dairy products and praising itself as a Health Bar. Vogt's Dairy was in Delhi. In addition to ice cream, the department also sold milk, cream, buttermilk, cheese and cottage cheese. Bresee's had plenty of competition for ice cream on Main Street at the time, with the popular Laskaris' and Kandyland restaurants open summer evenings. The depart- ment eventually turned into a full restaurant on the main floor. The food was considered "comfort food" and was moderately priced. — Mark Simonson Mark Simonson is the Oneonta city historian. These advertisements once appeared in The Daily Star, Oneonta Star or The Oneonta Herald. 18 O-Town Scene Aug. 18, 2011
