Steve has been a faculty member at the UCLA Law School for 27 years and is a recipient of the school's Excellence in Teaching Award. Juan Eichelberger (RHP) – Led the 1974 Cal Bears in wins (7), ERA (2.75), and strikeouts (73). Juan had a 7-year major league career with the Padres, Indians, and Braves. Mike Hodgins (CF) – Holds the Cal record for most hits in a game (6) vs. UCLA. Mike was a three-sport athlete at Cal (football, rugby). Randy Hooper (SS) – 1974 Co-Captain. All- Pac-8 in 1973 and 1974. All-District-8 in 1974. "Fielding the ground ball to get the final out to beat Stanford and keep them from a Pac-8 title and NCAA berth was a great way to end my Cal career. To me, Cal and Cal Baseball mean loyalty, friendship, perseverance, and camaraderie." Randy was responsible for Bob Milano's nickname "7." When Bob returned to coach at Cal, Randy refused to give up his #6, so Bob had to wear #7. The entire team knew he didn't want the number so they called him "7." Randy is a personal injury and criminal defense attorney. John Hughes (LHP) – 1974 Most Inspirational Player, pitching coach at Cal (1979-1990) for Bob Milano. John beat Stanford four times in his two-year career and threw a complete game in the 3-2 victory over Stanford in his final game. "My lifelong friendships and my career all came about because of my days as a student athlete at Cal. I cherish the memories and friendships I gained through my time as a player and coach. I am truly blessed." John is a Major League Baseball scout for the Miami Marlins and a Cal Baseball Foundation board member. Ed Maurino (IF) – The guy who kept the 1974 team loose with his humor, laughter, and friendship. "Some say my meaningful playing time ended the day my errant throw in pre-game infield hit Coach Wolfman. My best friends today are my teammates at Cal, which is why I always come back to Cal events and Alumni Day, so we can pick up right where we left off." Ed is a pharmacist. Hank Sauer (OF) – Second on 1974 team in home runs (6). Hit a three-run HR in Cal's 3-2 win vs. Stanford in the final game. "Cal Baseball represents youth, dreams, and desires all at the same time. But what really made it special were my teammates. We didn't win any championships but we shared the same dreams. I believe we are all better men because of our days at Cal together. I come back with my grandson so he can see how important that time in my life was to me so he, too, will someday have those dreams and desires." Hank is in finance. Bobby Tulk (2B) – The team's leader and steady rock. Co-captain in 1973 and 1974. Led Cal in fielding percentage. "Cal Baseball is our lifeline to Cal and all the guys who played together on Evans Diamond. There is no tighter group of ballplayers than the class of 1974." Bobby is a consultant pharmacist and a retired reserve police officer. The 1974 Golden Bears (Continued from page 1) Tyson Ross, 2014 MLB All-Star T yson Ross, a standout Golden Bear pitcher in 2006-08, became the sixth Cal Baseball player in school history to be named a Major League All- Star, representing the San Diego Padres in the 2014 All-Star Game. He is the second All-Star selected who played under Cal coach David Esquer, joining former Bear slugger Allen Craig of the St. Louis Cardinals, who was selected in 2013. In his fifth Major League season, Ross, 27, is the 10th starting pitcher in San Diego Padre club history to be named a National League All-Star. At the time of his selection, he led all 2014 Padres pitchers in wins, ERA, innings pitched, and opponent batting average, and ranked second in strikeouts.
