SAE Cycling Team Makes Strides on Track T hose who attended the 2014 Little 500 witnessed tremendous improvement by the SAE Bike Team. In fact, in a post-race interview, the Race Director Jordan Bailey commented on how Team SAE had improved and that "SAE rode a brilliant race." He further commented about Team SAE's comeback after going down in a wreck and was almost a lap down; he said "it's phenomenal what SAE did to catch the pack!" For those who don't know, Team SAE finished seventh and it was a very fun race to watch. Announced after the race, then-sophomore Andy Krahulik '16 was chosen by his peers for the 2014 Little 500 All Star Rider Team! They only choose eight riders out of 132. Congrats, Andy! We would be remiss if we didn't thank our 2014 seniors Nathan Brown '14, Jacob Elliott '14, Zack Raubuck '14, captain Travis Verhoff '14, and mechanic Jon Steele '14 for their multiple-year commitment to the SAE Bike Team. These brothers set the bar high and were instrumental in leading SAE Cycling back to the elite group of Little 500 Teams. We wish them well and hope that they will continue to support SAE Cycling. Moving forward, we have a great group of guys who understand their role and are just as committed to the bike team. Led by team captain, Andy Krahulik, are Arjun Sridhar '15, Mitchell Sasseman '16, Jake Hartmeister '16, Stephen Bonica '17, Neil Troeger '17, and Ryan Schroeck '17. Most of these guys were part of our "B Team" this past year so they know that training for the 2015 race started in May 2014. Yes, we had an "A Team" and a "B Team" and were fortunate to have a total of nine riders giving us some depth. We are happy to report that the guys have been pounding out base miles as well as racing all summer in road races, criterium events and track racing at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis. We will have an opportunity to assess their fitness levels at our SAE Cycling Camp, which will take place in Bloomington, the weekend of the Hilly Hundred, October 10-12. We think we will be very pleased with the fitness levels. You have heard us preach before, but to have a successful cycling program, it not only takes a strong physical and mental commitment from the riders but also a strong financial commitment from our alumni. Times have changed; we need to raise between $8,000 to $10,000+ from year-to-year, to put an elite team on the track. Money that we raise goes toward race fees throughout the year, equipment, tools, spring break cycling trip, and training aids which include rollers, CompuTrainers, cyclometers, branded cycling shorts, jerseys, sweats, gloves, and winter cycling gear. We approve all of the bike team's expenditures so we are good stewards with the money that is contributed. In the past we have been fortunate to have some generous financial alumni support and we thank them and encourage others to step up and support the Bike Team by sending a check today! Checks can be made out and mailed to Jim Fissinger '83 at 8444 Spring Mill Court, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260. Thank you in advance for your continued support and generous contributions. We will keep you updated on our financial goal and bike team's progress throughout the year.
