fall 2014 Candlelight Beta Phi Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha • Purdue University Published by the Beta Phi Foundation W e are looking forward to an exciting weekend as we prepare to rededicate our Chapter House and reconnect with brothers from all eras. Here's a look at what is on the schedule: Friday – An evening alumni reception and dinner at the Dauch Alumni Center (Dutch treat dinner). Reception sponsored by the Beta Phi Foundation. Saturday – Tours of the renovated Chapter House and a buffet lunch provided by the Chapter. Depending on game time of the Purdue vs. Wisconsin match-up, there will be scholarship awards, recognition of guests, group singing, special recognitions, and a group picture in front of the house. After the game the Beta Phi Foundation will host a reception for alumni, guests, parents, and friends at the Chapter House. Sunday – An open day to catch up with friends and tour the campus. Contact Rich Russell at (810) 877-1958 for more information on the weekend's events. A separate reunion flyer will be sent covering details of the weekend. See the Transformation In this Candlelight we have pictorially highlighted the changes at the Chapter House. The renovation process was started over four years ago. Make plans to come back and see all the improvements. Special thanks to all the Beta Phi alumni who generously contributed to the capital campaign, enabling us to raise $1.2 million to complete this needed renovation. Accolades for the Work We are pleased to report the Chapter House is completely full this fall and, for the first time, has a waiting list. At the summer 2014 National Pike Convention, Beta Phi was recognized as the top chapter house in the country completing a total renovation. What You Will See • The house continues to have shared single rooms on the second floor and new four- man suites on the third floor. All common areas and individual rooms now have air conditioning. • The first floor foyer, living room, alumni room, and study room all have a new look. • We have a new boiler, smoke and fire alarm system, and upgraded electrical wiring in all rooms. • Restrooms and showers have been upgraded. This extensive remodeling was needed to bring the house up to current building codes and university and city requirements. It was also done to keep our Pike Chapter House competitive with the large Greek system at Purdue. We continue to have a premier location on campus. Since we moved from Andrew Place to our present location on University Street, Beta Phi brothers have called this their home and have shared and enjoyed the bonds of brotherhood. Through this major renovation we are preparing for future brothers to share these same experiences. If you cannot attend the special weekend celebration, please stop by the Chapter House anytime you come back to Purdue. We can all be very proud of our Beta Phi. In the Bonds, Rich Russell '58 President, Beta Phi Foundation T he remarkable completed renovation of the Pike Chapter House at Purdue could not have taken place without the leadership and dedication of five of our alumni brothers. The group worked as a team, with each taking on his particular area of expertise. This special group consisted of Charlie Hetrick '63, Foundation board member and construction chairman; Brian Doolittle '70, Foundation board member and capital campaign chairman; Bob Nice '82, Home Association member and bank loan chairman; and Bill Kinder '95 and Doug Kinder '91, general contractors. Each of these brothers played an important part in the transformation of our home— updating it, bringing it up to current codes, and putting it in a place to compete with the top fraternities at Purdue. With our great location and completed total house renovation, we are now regarded as one of the top Greek organizations on campus. The only way we can show our appreciation and gratitude to these five brothers is to thank them publically and personally. The continued bonds of brotherhood and the generous donation from Beta Phi alumni have made this renovation possible and created a home for future Purdue Pikes. To Five Beta Phi Brothers A Special Thanks Special invitation to chapter houSe rededication and pike reunion Weekend november 7-9
