Stormwater inspectors collect samples on a quarterly basis and have been doing so since September 2005 as part of the City's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Inspectors take samples in the Cross Creek, Blounts Creek, Beaver Creek, Buckhead Creek and Little 5RFN¿VK&UHHNZDWHUVKHGV:KHQWHVWLQJWKHLQVSHFWRUVREVHUYH air and water temperature, hours since the last rain event, pH of water, turbidity, dissolved R[\JHQOHYHOVFRQGXFWLYLW\DQGÀRZUDWHDVZHOODVWRUHSRUWDQ\VLJQVRIREYLRXVSROOXWLRQ Once the inspectors record these observations, water is collected for laboratory testing. The samples are sent to Microbac Laboratories to be analyzed for several water quality indicators, such as total suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorous and fecal coliform. One reason is so that the City remains compliant with the NPDES MS4 Phase 1 permit. Staff also samples to assess the effectiveness of best management practices and local water quality.
