SEPTEMBER 17-23, 2014 UCW 7 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Local Fundraiser The Holly Day Fair 2605 Fort Bragg road 910.323.5509 www.jlfay.org The Holly Day Fair is an exciting event that kicks-off the holiday sea- son! It is the largest holiday gift and craft show in eastern North Carolina — and boasts more than 200 ven- dors and an average attendance of 21,000 shoppers. It's great to see returning shop- pers and vendors year after year. New vendors and shoppers are also welcome! This year the Holly Day Fair has expanded it publicity efforts to reach markets not only in those counties that surround Fayetteville, but also to several neighboring states. This year the Junior League of Fayetteville's 48th Annual Holly Day Fairs is themed "A Classic Christmas!" The members of the Junior League are anxiously awaiting your visit to the Holly Day Fair at the Crown Expo Center Nov. 6-9. It's a tradition you don't want to miss! Best Local Community Project Whimsical Dogwoods The City of Fayetteville Fayetteville residents love their dog- woods. In fact, we celebrate them! This year, the City of Fayetteville asked local artists to create works of art to express their love and appreciation of our favorite flower. The artists' works were installed along Hay Street as part of a public art exhibit. There were 15 dog- wood statues, which were made possible by the city, the Fayetteville Observer and Cross Creek Mall along with a cultural arts tourism grant from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. The project was designed to increase tourism to Fayetteville and Cumberland County. By showcasing local artists in a highly visible and creative way, the city increased visibility of its museums and parks, as well as its side streets and unified the community with an icon. If you saw one you think you can't live without, remember the Whimsical Dogwoods are available for auction in October. Pieces will be retouched by artists and ready for permanent installation around Fayetteville and Cumberland County! Imagine them in your garden or at your business as a focal piece. Best Non-Profit Community Project Partnership for Children of Cumberland County 351 Wagoner Dr., Suite 200 910.867.9700 www.ccpfc.org The people of Cumberland County love their children. The Partnership for Children of Cumberland County loves children as well. In fact, its whole purpose is to ensure that Cumberland County children have the oppor- tunity to succeed in school and be prepared to contribute to our social and economic future. Founded by the N.C. Legislature during the 1993-1994, the Partnership for Children was one of 12 entities established by the legislature to implement Smart Start. The success of the first partnerships led to the five year expansion of the initiative. In 1998, Smart Start services were available statewide. Several states have developed initiatives similar to the Smart Start model. All states are at different levels of development and funding. Those states include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Today, the organization contin- ues to strive to meet its goal: Creating a community committed to the health, safety, happiness, and education of all of our children and their families.
