Special to Desert Messenger By Lyle Browning ~ University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Service Palms are a popular landscape plant here in the low desert. They send a message of a tropical cli- mate even in our sub-tropical climate. Winter visitors seem to be more impressed because they just don't see them in colder areas. There are two types of palms used in landscapes in our low desert; the wide leaf or frond is called a fan palm. There are several varieties of fan palms, from fairly small ones to palms 70 feet tall growing here. Palms with narrower or pinnate leaves are called feather palms. The feather palms can produce ed- ible dates. Palms are fairly easy to grow and don't require a lot of care except for pruning, and that can be a fairly diffi cult task when larger plants are involved. All Silver Coins, .999 Bars, Sterling Silverware, etc. There are not many diseases that affect palms here in the desert; most of the damage to palms is done by the people who have them. Be careful with weed eaters and other mechanical devices in turf areas and be careful not to get the crown or top of small palms wet or damp. Some palms that are native to tropical areas where there will be acidic soils will not do well here. To keep a palm looking good here it helps to apply the correct fertilizers and regular irrigation. Palm roots can be invasive so be careful to not plant them near plumbing. We can assist you with informa- tion on selection and care of palms.
