Messing delves into 'Mysteries' By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it Though she had one of her first major acting jobs on "NYPD Blue," Debra Messing didn't play a cop. Twenty years later, after a variety of roles in other series from "Will & Grace" (which earned her an Emmy) to "Smash," she's supporting law ... and order, also in her character's own household. Based on a Spanish series and premiering Wednesday, Sept. 17, NBC's seriocomic "The Mysteries of Laura" casts Messing as a New York homicide detective with frisky twin sons (Charlie and Vincent Reina) and a soon-to-be- ex-husband (Josh Lucas, "The Firm") who becomes her new boss. Laz Alonso plays her partner. "I am fascinated by the judicial system," Messing says. "I am amazed by how extreme human nature can present itself. In my downtime, I watch '48 Hours' and 'Dateline (NBC),' and everything has to do with murder. I know that there must be something that I should explore about that with my therapist, but I'm like, 'OK, do we have a murder on tonight?' " Still, the familiar, lively aspects of Messing's persona are accommodated by the lighter moments in "The Mysteries of Laura." Explains executive producer Jeff Rake, who developed the show for American television, "Det. Laura Diamond and her colleagues will be solving closed-ended mysteries of the week, so that is the most literal interpretation of (the title) — but at the same time, it is the mystery of this character. In a sense, it's the mystery of the working mother. How in the world does she get it done at perhaps one of the most perplexing times of her life?" Rake lists Laura's challenges as her being "recently divorced, thrown together with her ex in the workplace, and just the juggle of getting those kids fed, getting them off to school, dealing with how to get back out in the world as a single woman and pull yourself together and present yourself to the workplace, to the places that you go in your personal life." Greg Berlanti ("Brothers & Sisters") and McG ("Charlie's Angels") also are among the executive producers of "The Mysteries of Laura." Messing feels she's in good hands in the sort of project she's longed for, neither all comedic nor all dramatic. "I think that it is a monumental effort to be a present parent and to be a responsible employee," the actress reasons. "In one hour, you're going to feel good and feel like you're succeeding ... and the next hour, you're going to fall short and you're going to have to pick yourself up and say, 'OK. I'm just going to keep trying.' That's what I love about her. She just keeps trying." Laz Alonso and Debra Messing play police partners in "The Mysteries of Laura," premiering Wednesday on NBC. 2 The Goshen News • TV Spotlight • September 15 - 21, 2014 KARAOKE!!!
