The Gilbert Theater, in downtown Fayetteville, has long been regarded by locals
as a place to go for a night of fun and entertainment. The
theater is comprised of a mix of semi-professional talents
and those wishing to learn the craft. Over the years the group
has brought countless high quality shows to the stage for the
community to enjoy.
For the upcoming 2014-2015 season, the theater has
assembled a line-up of shows that are a mix of plays and
musicals, comedy and drama and classics and contemporary
shows.
Nunsense
Sept. 15 – Oct. 5
A Christmas Carol Nov. 28 – Dec. 21
A Streetcar Named Desire Feb. 13 - March 1
Backstage March 27 – April 12
The Book Club Play May 29 – June 14
The first show of the season, Nunsense, is a comedic musi-
cal about a group of nuns, The Little Sisters of Hoboken, who
are challenged with raising funds for the burials of many of
their fellow sisters who died from Sister Julia's cooking.
The show was originally written by Dan Goggin, opened
Off-Broadway in 1985 and ran for 10 years entertaining
thousands along the way. According to the official website for
the original show, it has been translated into
21 different languages and been made into more than 5,000
worldwide productions making the show an, "international
phenomenon."
Michelle Zaun is regularly a company and stage manager working behind the
scenes for the various Gilbert productions. For Nunsense, Zaun steps out onto the
Gilbert stage for the first time as a member of the cast. Zaun enthusiastically spoke
about her Gilbert debut.
"All around, I am incredibly excited for this… Not only am I falling more and more
in love with the show every time I work through it, but it is
because I know what a great cast we have," said Zaun.
Zaun is also of the mindset that the show is exactly what
and audience in this area would appreciate.
"The community is going to love this show, it has a little bit
of everything for everyone. It is a show that isn't afraid to make
fun of itself. Each of the nuns that are in the show are open-
minded in that sense. There is never a moment where they
seem like they have to hide who they are, they are very bold."
Zaun elaborated about the show and Gilbert saying, "The
thing that I love the most about the Gilbert is that we get to
do theater outside-of-the-box. We get to do things that are
fun and are not afraid to make fun of themselves. This show
brings everybody in. You are not just sitting there watch-
ing people perform something they have practiced. It is an
intimate theatre, we are in your face. We are laughing at
ourselves and we want you to laugh with us."
The production is directed by Matthew Overturf who will
lead the all-women cast of Joyce Lipe, Ruth Nelson, Marie
Lowe, Michelle Zaun, Antionette Gage and others.
The show will run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
starting Sept. 19 and through Oct. 5. Shows begin at 8 p.m. on
Fridays, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and a 2 p.m. matinee
on Sundays. Tickets are $16 with military and senior discounts
