SEPTEMBER 3-9, 2014 UCW 11 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Sickness in a family is difficult, even more so when it involves a child. Recognizing this struggle that both the families and children faced inspired the creation of the Cape Fear Valley Friends of Children. This organization is a nonprofit group that helps families and children get the care that they need. Because it is a nonprofit group, funds can be a challenge. That is why L.B. Floyd and his wife, Yvonne. stepped in and the L.B. Floyd Friends of Children Golf Classic was created. The name was later changed to the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation's Friends of Children Classic in Memory of L.B. Floyd. The Golf Classic began in 1993 and has raised $1.4 million since. In the past these funds have been used to enhance pediatric care through the purchase of surgical instruments and renovations at Cape Fear Valley Health with the newest Pediatric Intensive Care unit, including new Neonatal Intensive Care unit beds. The tradition of helping continues, and this year proceeds will be used to continue renovations in the Children's Center at Cape Fear Valley Health as well as the Neonatal Transporter. This is a mobile unit designed to transport delicate newborns to the NICU while providing needed respiratory support. This year the tournament is at the Highland Country Club, located at 2381 Raeford Rd. The course was renovated last year and the incredible grounds designed by Donald Ross in 1945, have been completely revitalized. The entire course is now up to USGA specifications and "have been seeded with newer bentgrass blends that are characterized by a deeper green color, higher shot density for superior putting and a higher ability to sustain traffic." This gorgeous course is the perfect backdrop for the incredible game and generosity indicative of the annual Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation's Friends of Children Classic in Memory of L.B. Floyd. The tournament is Oct. 2, and will start at 7:30 a.m. with morning registration and a small to-go breakfast. Afternoon registration begins at 10:30 a.m. At 5:30 p.m., a beer and wine tasting is on tap, followed by a casual dining experience with a trip giveaway. This year the trip options include Pebble Beach for a golf outing, Napa Valley for a wine experience and Disneyworld for a family vacation. Sponsorships range from a Hole Sponsor at a commitment of $250 to a $10,000 commitment as a Presenting Sponsor. These sponsorships include varying numbers of golfer spots and dinner tickets. On Oct. 1 all Platinum Sponsors ($5,000) and above will have a tour of the Medical Center and a VIP dinner with the Cape Fear Valley Administration. The cost to play is $500 and includes one golf spot and one dinner ticket. Patron options are also available for $1,000, but does not include a spot in the tournament; however two dinner tickets are included.
