Radical Randy™, an asthma education doll at Rutherford Regional Health System (RRHS), helps children who suffer from asthma to learn more about their illness. Asthma is the most prevalent chronic condition in children, occurring in approximately 7-10 percent of the population. Pediatric asthma patients are oen reluctant to follow the prescribed regimen of controller medications. When the symptoms abate, they oen cease or forget the medications. With Radical Randy, healthcare educators can explain and actually show children what happens in their lungs and airways during an asthma attack. As a result, children understand why regular medication is important and they begin taking an active role in monitoring and controlling their asthma. e Radical Randy™ doll at Rutherford Regional is 30" tall, weighs about two pounds and comes dressed in shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes. According to Medikin, maker of the doll, Radical Randy™ is constructed of so, durable fabric with embroidered details, and Randy's rib cage opens to reveal lungs, healthy and inflamed airways, plus removable, inflatable bronchioles. In the unaffected bronchiole, healthy airflow can be demonstrated. In the affected bronchiole, airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, mucus accumulation and their relation to symptoms and medication compliance can be shown in age-appropriate ways. Joyce McCain, director of Cardio-Pulmonary Services at RRHS takes Radical Randy to elementary schools throughout the county to teach students about asthma. "One out of every four children will have asthma," Joyce says. "Almost half of the children in the classes I visit at least know someone, whether it be a parent, sibling, or friend who has asthma, and teaching them about the disease helps the children better understand what they go through." Asthma can be a confusing topic for children to understand, Joyce says. She uses the weather, a topic that children already understand, to explain how asthma is constantly changing. For instance, if the child can breathe without a problem, then they can relate their asthma at that time, to a sunny day. If they are experiencing a severe attack, then the child can relate their asthma at that time, to a thunder storm. Radical Randy will be appearing at the fun and educational Camp WheezKnot on September 13, 2014. Camp Wheezknot is an annual camp for children ages 7 to 12 who have a history of asthma. Camp is free to attend, and campers take part in traditional camp activities while also receiving asthma education. Call 286-5444 to register.
