Artist of the
Month:
Simone
Mantellassi
More Art Space will present "Mindy Metal-
man" an exhibition of new works by Simone
Mantellassi. An opening reception will begin
at 5 p.m. Aug. 8, including an analogue sound
experiment by Buildings and Mountains.
The body of work was created over the last
several months at his home in Gilbertsville.
"His studio walls are completely covered
with drawings – in some places five deep,"
explained Zena Gurbo, wife and curator. She
describes the drawings as "comic books
gone awry." (The exhibition will also include
paintings, collages, photos and sculptures).
"He's one of the most prolific artists I know
and doesn't let anything get in the way of his
creativity."
Mantellassi, an Italian-born artist, has exhibit-
ed extensively in the U.S. and abroad and has
received numerous awards and accolades for
his inventive style and presentation. His work
is part of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery collec-
tion in Buffalo, as well. Recently, he and his
wife Zena Gurbo opened MAS as a center for
visual arts exhibitions and creative gatherings.
MAS is open from noon to 5 p.m. Friday
and Saturday at 77 Main St. in Oneonta. The
exhibit will be up through Sept. 13. For more
