HARTWICK, NY "A Great Place To Live" 279343 A16 16 O-Town Scene August 7, 2014 By Lindsey Zimmerman Sloan's New York Grill, at 337 Chestnut St. in Oneonta, shows little resemblance to the Ponderosa restaurant once housed there. Quickly becoming one of the area's fastest growing restaurants, Sloan's is carving out its own niche in our small community, and after eating there you will know why. Many factors contribute to the success of a restaurant, especially new restau- rants, and Sloan's has strived to get many of these things right so far. One of the things that helps them stand out from many other restaurants in the area, is their dedication to the local farms and econ- omy. They pride themselves on serving only local, fresh meats and produce, and stocking a variety of New York wine and beer as well. In addition to being predominantly a steakhouse, Sloan's offers a variety of dishes that are vegetarian friendly, containing no meat products at all. Fresh vegetables and produce are an important part of the menu and they work hard with their network of local suppliers to serve only the freshest ingredients to their customers. All of the meat is butchered on site, providing for the least amount of time from farm to table. Their lunch and dinner menu vary slightly, with some lighter versions of their dinner options available for lunch. My trip for lunch began with an order of french onion soup and the marinated mushroom appetizer special. The soup was appropri- ately hot, with the cheese perfectly melted and sizzling on the top as it had just come out of the broiler. The broth was robust and flavorful, but not overly salty like some onion soups tend to be. The mushrooms were excellent as well, with just the right mix of sweetness, vinegar and herbs. They were plump and juicy and pan-sauteed for just the right amount of time. My next course was a grilled chicken spiedie Caeser salad, which may sound very generic, but did not taste so, as the dressing was obviously made in-house and the chicken spiedies were juicy, burst- ing with flavor, and grilled to perfection. After the salad, my Reuben and french fries arrived. The Reuben is my favorite sandwich, so I have a very high stan- dard and am often very critical of Reu- bens. Again, I was not disapointed. With savory corned beef, sauerkraut, and house-made Russian dressing, the sand- wich had all the components of a success- ful sandwich. It had plenty of sauerkraut and dressing, which are often the least present components of the sandwich. Without the right proportions of dressing and sauerkraut, even the best corned beef can be somewhat boring. Getting this combination correct is crucial to making the perfect Rueben. All in all, my experience at Sloan's was very enjoyable. The service was atten- tive, the food came quickly, and when the check came I was very happy to see that I did not put myself into debt by eating at a steakhouse. I left with a joyful satisfac- tion, having enjoyed a delicious meal, and knowing that I was doing my part to sup- port the local farms in the area. Everything at Sloan's, from the atmo- sphere to the food, screams upstate New York, and would make any resident or guest of our region feel right at home.
