I believe these words, as shared by our beloved Dr. Stephenson, capture our ultimate pursuit as Zeta Phi advisors. Our advisory team is committed to supporting the worthy endeavors of chapter members by serving as role models and providing guidance aimed at improving the chapter experience. Our advisory team members are dedicated to: • Helping ensure the chapter culture is aligned with Beta Theta Pi's mission, vision, and core values (mutual assistance, intellectual growth, trust, integrity, and responsible conduct). • Challenging the membership to remain accountable to the individual and collective duties and obligations of membership (even when this means supporting individual discipline or expulsion). • Advising members on the best practices and ways to make the chapter more successful. • Being the consistent role model for the constantly changing undergraduate executive board. We are very fortunate to have a strong group of men leading the chapter this year. I am steadily amazed by the breadth and depth of talent in 520's leadership factory! Our jobs as advisors are made infinitely easier thanks to the strong leadership exhibited by Jake Maxwell '15 and his executive board members. Expectations are always high for this group of distinguished young men, and they are rising to the occasion. We anticipate another banner year for the chapter. But what does the typical year look like for advisors and the chapter? I have frequently been asked this question and I believe the best parallel to our Zeta Phi lifecycle is Mizzou's football team: Late winter and early spring—Preparation MU: The Tigers use spring practice to prepare for the fall season by indoctrinating new players/leaders, preparing for big games in the fall, developing leaders, and finalizing their playbook. Zeta Phi: Similarly, our new leaders take over following the initiation of the fall class. Spring is our intensive preparation period with numerous planning meetings (locally and regionally), officer orientation, goal-setting, and meticulously preparing for big events in the fall. Summer—Zeta Phi's evolving recruitment model MU: Recruiting is a year-long, never-ending process for Mizzou football. Coaches actively develop a network of high school coaches to help identify the next superstar. They then evaluate the player based on their standards (and in many cases, the Mizzou coaches identify talent better than the recruiting services because they know what they are looking for). Without solid, consistent recruiting, Mizzou football suffers. Zeta Phi: Recruitment is the lifeblood of Zeta Phi. We have clearly been successful with "rush" through the years, but we aim to evolve from "rush"—where we are somewhat passive in our recruiting efforts— to "recruitment," like Mizzou football. Matt Gibbs '04 does a terrific job as our recruitment advisor. He, along with other advisors and Foundation board members, is evaluating the effectiveness of our current efforts and will make recommendations to be implemented next year. Fall—Execution MU: Preparation is complete and now it's showtime for Mizzou football. The staff has prepared a game plan and now it's simply a matter of execution. Adversity may strike throughout the year (i.e. injuries, turnovers, etc.) and in those moments the A Publication of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi The Zeta Phi SUMMER 2014 "Let the word go out across this campus and across Beta's Broad Domain that the Betas at Ol' Mizzou are still dedicated to helping high-minded young men sort out the priorities of life's values at an early age, in helping bridge the gap between growth and maturity and assisting them to embark on worthwhile paths of endeavor." The weekend was a nice study break and a good chance to spend quality time with our mothers.
