This is a new transitional home for older youth, located beside the Hands on Missions office and Christine's Home on Hwy 180 North. Sandra's Home will be a division of Laura's Homes of North Carolina and will assist youth who have "aged out" of the foster care system and will help prepare them for independent living. The home will give the children interested in attending college a stable, supportive environment and help them to be able to continue their education, seek employment, get a car and insurance, and gain the skills and tools necessary to lead a productive, successful life. The facility will be named after Sandra Hendrick Ware. Sandra was a beautiful lady with a strong love for people, especially children. She was a loving wife and mother of two boys. Sandra worked in the Children's Department at Double Springs Baptist Church for many years. She had a sweet, gentle and child-like spirit about her and all of the children loved her very much. Sandra's love for the Lord and her compassion and love for people were evident in the way she lived. Sandra died in 2000 from a brain tumor. Phifer Cabin also was the place where the Easter Bunny came to make it even more special. The lines were long, but the kids were excited and happy. You can tell by the smiles on their faces that two of those in the crowd were having the best time. Pictured here on the left is four year old, Lily, together with her seven year old brother, Corbett. The big bunny in the middle made their visit to Broad River extra special. –M. A. As it turned out there was more than the expected states participating. A total of 24 states and the District of Columbia were represented in this magnifi cent inaugural competi- tion. Athletes competed in either the sprint or draft-legal races. It all happened on Saturday, March 31. The start time was at 8 a.m. when the Men's Collegiate Sprint began. This was a 500 meter swim, a 22 kilometer bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run. At 8:05 a.m. the Women's Collegiate Sprint got underway with the same guidelines. Because so many members of the general public wanted to be a part of this fi rst-ever event, at 8:15 a.m. the General Public Sprint was thoughtfully in- cluded. At 10 a.m. the Men's Collegiate Team Draft-Legal began. This included a 1 kilo- meter swim, a 30 kilometer bike, and to fi nish, a 6 kilometer run. The same rules applied to the Woman's Collegiate Team-Draft which began at 12:15 p.m. The crowds were very large and the participants not only came to compete, but enjoy the wonders of nature that Rutherford County's Lake Lure offers. Many also took the time to visit Chimney Rock. Rumbling Bald Resort is where the athletes checked in. The overall goal of the exhibition event was to s as a future NCAA Emerging Sport for Women w current collegiate club triathletes, both m Draft-Legal racing with their college peers. Lake Lure and Chimney Rock continue to gr events. It is a constant discovery for therford County? 828-245-4949 7EST -AIN 3T &OREST #ITY ,OCATED .EAR $OWNTOWN &OREST #ITY "LOCK &ROM /WLS 3TADIUM & $ #' ## #& ! "% % " "% !
