1540 louisiana B uilt in 1969, the "new" 1540 Louisiana will soon turn 40 years old. In 1999, the House Corporation undertook a campaign to renovate the Chapter House and raised $1.5 million. This enabled the Chapter to update the kitchen, dining hall, main floor living areas, bathrooms and sections of the basement. Air conditioning was installed throughout the facility and the project addressed certain building and fire code issues. These improvements served the Chapter well and aided in FIJI maintaining an attractive and well-functioning Chapter House. Since that time, the Chapter House has received no major renovations or updates, with the exceptions of the housemother's quarters in 2012 and replacement of the boiler and hot water system in 2013. A recent comprehensive survey of the facility reveals that the house has the following shortcomings. aging inFrastruCture The safety and comfort of our collegiate members are of utmost importance; we must offer a structurally sound and livable home for our undergraduate brothers. The study indicated many long- and short-term issues as priorities. While the electrical, HVAC, windows and plumbing systems are still functioning, they are nearing their life expectancies and must be updated to handle the current capacity needs. The bathrooms are fatigued. Our internal and external security systems are antiquated, inadequate and not in line with other competing houses. Like our personal homes, our Chapter House must be a safe haven that instills confidence in our members and their parents. setting ourselVes aPart While FIJI continues to attract top men, we know that we are losing quality potential members to fraternities that offer much better facilities. Specifically, Beta, Delt, DU, Lambda Chi, Phi Delt, Phi Psi, SAE, and Sigma Chi have all completed or are beginning new construction or renovation projects for their chapter houses and other fraternities are making plans as well. Since our renovation in 1999, every one of our traditional peer fraternities has undergone one and, in some instances, two major renovations. We are at a competitive disadvantage in regard to our living quarters. Each passing year makes our shortcomings more pronounced. This has placed Pi Deuteron at a disadvantage in recruitment and caused retention challenges with upperclassmen. The study showed an overall lack of modern amenities that appeal to and reflect today's students. We must provide 21st century lifestyle updates to remain competitive and attract high-caliber men. Pursuing eXCellenCe The University of Kansas is as academically challenging as ever. In fact, the university plans to raise admission standards beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. The report specified our study areas are outdated and do not meet the demands of today's college students. We have all seen the impact of technology over the years, as devices not present during your college years are now necessities. The need for an enhanced, quiet, well-lit, and comfortable study space within our facility is necessary for our members to achieve. Our plan will ensure that Pi Deuteron members excel academically and remain scholastic leaders on campus and within the Greek system. It has become clear that we must make a major investment in 1540 Louisiana if we are to remain competitive, provide a quality living environment, and continue the tradition we all helped build.
