Nancy Stoner, a therapy dog trainer and volunteer with the organization, said many dogs are suitable for training. One of her best students was a pit bull mix. The key, she said, is in whether the owner/parent/handler is suitable and whether the dog and the owner have a solid, loving relationship. There are currently about 400 teams certified in our area, although all of them do not volunteer regularly. Deacon and Patrick completed the process and began volunteering less than a year ago. They've read to local school children, but their concentration over the next year or so will be in two programs at Brunswick Community College. Appointed in 2013 to the school's board of trustees (and assigned to be the trustee liaison with the school's foundation board), O'Bryant feels a strong bond with the school. "We have two excellent programs that provide so much. The Brunswick Interagency Program is such a great way to get our developmentally challenged adults engaged in the workforce."
