IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY PAGE 5 A RICH HISTORY OF DEDICATED MEMBERS G amma Upsilon has a long and proud history at Iowa State. Founded in 1908, we are the second oldest continuously running fraternity on campus. Our community of alumni includes successful businessmen like Brother Bill Burke '74 and compassionate community leaders like Brother Gene Ehlert '59. We are incredibly grateful for their involvement over the years. Strong alumni support helps us continue our mission of binding young men in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principals. Recently we set out to update our alumni records. We are looking for brothers who are passionate about Alpha Tau Omega. During this process we also set out to find our oldest living alumni. We figured that a chapter that has been around for over 100 years will have some storied alumni. This was an opportunity for us to learn about the long history and traditions of Gamma Upsilon and how Alpha Tau Omega has changed the lives of young men for over a century. Our searches led us across the country, but we believe we have tracked down our oldest living alumnus. Brother Richard MacDuff '37 celebrated his 97th birthday this April. Our chapter president corresponded with Brother MacDuff and we received a very nice letter in return. Gamma Upsilon would like to acknowledge our most senior alumnus and will be sending Brother MacDuff his Diamond Certificate in celebration of more than 75 years of membership in the Alpha Tau Omega brotherhood. We also spoke with Brother Lynn Lillie '38. Brother Lillie went to high school in the Des Moines area and chose Iowa State to continue his education. When he showed up in Ames he had no intention of joining a fraternity. No one in his immediate family had been a member and he was not too familiar with Greek life. Then he met the young leaders of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. At this time, the chapter was barely 30 years old. Brother Lillie went through the pledge program in the fall of 1938. Brother Lillie describes his time at Alpha Tau Omega as "a good experience." Some of his most vivid memories include hiking with his pledge brothers and living in the cold airs in the chapter house. After college, Brother Lillie joined the service, and after retiring from the military he worked for Pan American Airways for 34 years. He is enjoying retirement in Carson City, Nevada. Other brothers we were able to track down during our search include Brother Jack Gearhart '41 and Brother George Thornburgh '41. We were able to speak with Brother Gearhart about his time in our chapter from 1938 to 1943. Brother Gearhart has very fond memories of his time as an undergraduate member. He said that he was very involved in the chapter leadership and was even the head cheerleader on campus for a time. Brother Gearhart said that when he came to Iowa State he was very impressed by what all the fraternities had to offer, but Alpha Tau Omega impressed him the most. With their rigorous academic standards and the good relationship the men in the chapter had with each other, Brother Gearhart knew that Gamma Upsilon was for him. We are proud to report that we carry on those traditions today. Gamma Upsilon is currently ranked 10th out of 28 fraternities on campus for our GPA. We were able to track down Brother George Thornburgh as well and spoke with his lovely wife. Brother Thornburgh had quite the Alpha Tau Omega career. He was initiated at the Iowa State chapter and eventually transferred to the Nebraska chapter. When his career took him to Oregon, he served as the adviser to the Oregon State chapter until he retired from the University. Brother Thornburgh has been happily married to his wife for 71 years. Mrs. Thornburgh is the granddaughter, niece, and wife of Alpha Tau Omega brothers. The Thornburghs have a special place in their heart for the fraternity as it has had a very positive influence on their life. The undergraduates would like to send their love and respect to the whole community of alumni dating all the way back to our first initiate in 1908, Gaillard Swift. Your contributions have helped us continue our mission for over 100 years. We look forward to hearing from more alumni as we continue into the next 100 years at Iowa State.
