editors TIME TO HEAL W ith any luck your spring cleaning is done, your winter clothes are packed away and you’re ready to take on my favorite time of the year: Summer. I’m fond of saying that while I tend to complain about the cold all winter long, at least no one will hear me whining about the heat in the summer time. I’ll take the hot over the cold any day. In this issue, which we around the office have been referring to as our “Medical and Miracles” issue, we explore several approaches to healthy living. We hear about some local folks who went to help in Haiti (page 60) and we learn about the amazing things that can happen when people give freely of themselves, a lesson we all had a chance to learn firsthand after April’s awful tornadoes hit here. Also in this issue, I take to the trail for some outdoor exercise and contemplation (page 52) and local author Jennifer Joyner opens up and shares her brutally honest weight loss journey with all of us (page 44). I think you’ll find the stories to be just as encouraging and inspiring as we do. So sit still in the air conditioning for just long enough to read the excellent stories our writers have crafted and to ponder our photographers’ gorgeous pictures — and then get back outside and soak up some more summer.CV S ummer. Who doesn’t love summer and all that it brings? For me, it is a time for day-trips, beach vacations, cramming in summer reads that have grown on my list since winter, eating garden tomatoes and veggies that have been nurtured all spring and just living healthier. In this issue you can find articles anchored around healthy living. Did you know that saltwater pools have many therapeutic properties for ailments (page 36)? An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but so will finding balance in your life. Our HEALTH column (page 64) talks about some preventative maintenance that is good for your body, a dose of jazz (page 30) soothes the soul, a dose of God (page 16) is good for your heart, and GIVING (page 60), well everyone in our town knows a thing or two about giving after last month. So many experienced the outpouring of kindness from strangers with no strings attached. Before the tornado, many people were out there ‘paying it forward’ already. As expected, local residents and businesses once again showed their generosity and took care of their own. As people cleaned out their closets, pantries and gave financially, we all realized how much we truly have and we helped and watched others rebuild their lives.CV 10 | May/June • 2011
