A good rule of thumb is to always be prepared with enough food, water, clothing, and gear for an unexpected overnight stay out in the desert. Finally, go out to have fun. By planning ahead, alot of the stress and potential problems of an excursion should melt away. Go out to enjoy the outdoors, the fresh air, and the sunshine. Approach your outing with the attitude of excite- ment and adventure, but keep expecta- tions low. Go out to fi nd rocks, miner- als, or gold, but don't be disappointed if you don't fi nd anything. Take your camera and take pleasure in the beauty of your surroundings. Enjoy the peace and quiet and the sounds of nature. You don't just have garbage cans here; you have a garbage can by at least four recycling bins (aluminum, glass, plastic, and pa- per). Throwing away something is like a multiple-choice test. I LOVE IT HERE, and I haven't even talked about culture yet. I've only been here fi ve days, and at the college, I've heard M. Scott Momaday (author of House Made of Dawn) speak (free), the P.D.Q. Bach concert ($2), and a piano recital (free). Then there's the wonder- ful, organic farmers' market on Satur- days at the town square; the Wildberries (mostly organic) Market; and the very friendly Unitarian Fellowship where I went on Sunday and to a potluck earlier this evening. There's an old-fashioned movie theater here too, but I'd seen all the movies I wanted to see. Arcata has a good feel to it. It's a small town, really, and easy to get around in. There's lots of green, open space here. I haven't done much exploring because it's been stormy since I arrived four ARCATA FROM PAGE 17 SEE ARCATA PAGE 21
