It is breathtaking. e next major event is right here in our backyard; the Men's U.S. Open will be played in Pinehurst. We get a double bonus this year with the wom- en's U.S. Open being played the week following the men's. is will be good for Fayetteville because many people will fly into our airport to get to Pine- hurst. Some folks may even elect to stay in Fayetteville with the drive only being about 40 minutes away. In this issue, we have a quick guide to the event. e Men's U.S. Open always finishes on Father's Day, which is very spe- cial for dads, sons and grandsons that play golf. I have two sons. One is with the Lord Jesus Christ and the other lives in Wilmington with my two grand- sons. If you're an active reader of my column, you know that tennis is their number one sport of choice. However, the boys do play golf and we always play nine holes on Christmas Eve each year. e last time the U.S. Open played in Pinehurst was 2005. My son and number one grandson treated me for Father's Day to the last day of the tournament. Payne Stewart, who is now deceased, won the championship. It was a memorable day for me. I started playing golf almost 60 years ago. I don't play much anymore, but I still enjoy watching on television. My son Bob was an above average player and we used to play in the Carolina USGA Father-Son event every sum- mer up until he got too sick. Golf can have a wonderful familial connection, especially in mine. My parents and brother all played golf. So Father's Day and the coming U.S. Open always bring a tear to my eye just remembering all the family events surrounding golf. Golf is a game that can be played all of one's life. Enjoy the U.S. Open in Pinehurst and have a blessed summer. Aimee Farmer is the correct photographer of the images on pages 62 and 64 of our April Dogwood issue. We regret this error.
