Article provided by: Mike Garlow Article provided by: Mike Garlow North Carolina Farm Bureau's Healthy Living for a Lifetime Initiative to Provide Free Health Screenings in Forest City The North Carolina Farm Bureau's Healthy Living for a Lifetime initiative will provide free health screenings in the Walmart parking lot on Thursday, April 24th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rutherford County Health Department, Community Health Council of Rutherford County and other organizations are working with the North Carolina Farm Bureau and the Rutherford County Farm Bureau on this exciting initiative. Since the fall of 2010, North Carolina Farm Bureau's Healthy Living for a Lifetime initiative has provided nearly 9500 free health screenings. "On behalf of the Rutherford County Farm Bureau, we are happy to provide free health screenings for our community. The commitment from the medical community to help improve the overall health and wellbeing of our county is greatly appreciated. Farm Bureau has and will be committed to giving back to rural North Carolinians and this is just one more way we can give back to the communities that helped build our organization," said Bill Elliott, President, Rutherford County Farm Bureau. Jimmy Hines, Health Director of the Rutherford County Health Department said, "The Community Health Council of Rutherford County, which represents more than twenty organizations, supports the event and members are extremely appreciative that the North Carolina Farm Bureau selected Rutherford County to provide this valuable service." Hines added, "Rutherford County Farm Bureau has advocated for the service and played a key role in it becoming a reality in Rutherford County. Rutherford County leaders and organizations are working together to improve health in the county, and this is a great example of pulling together to support our residents in taking a step toward better health." Healthy Living for a Lifetime is an innovative approach to addressing the immediate healthcare needs of rural North Carolinians while fostering awareness of healthy lifestyle choices that will result in long-term health improvements among vulnerable populations. Using a 50-foot state-of-the-art mobile health screening unit, the initiative will provide rural North Carolinians with free health screenings, educational materials, and a path towards a healthier lifestyle. The unit is handicap accessible. The North Carolina Farm Bureau's Healthy Living for a Lifetime mobile unit will be equipped for the following screenings: cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, body mass index and vascular ultrasound. Fasting for 8 hours is recommended but not required. There will also be organizations from throughout the community to provide local resources to attendees. This event is open to the public.
