The woman behind the wine is Chris Kajani, who joined the Carneros Pinot Noir specialist in 2006. Kajani isn't a fan of big, buttery Chardonnays or over-the-top Pinots, preferring instead to make wines in a classic style, with moderate ripeness and alcohol levels. That philosophy shows in the lovely 2010 Brown Ranch Pinot Noir, made from Saintsbury's vineyard in Napa-Car- neros. The wine has sensuous aromas of earth and spiced cherries, with a hint of cedar. Its juicy cherry and raspberry flavors are enhanced by bright acidity and a silky texture. It's also well structured, with moderate tannins and a long finish. www.saintsbury.com. J Vineyards & Winery 2012 Chardonnay Russian River Valley ($28) Here is a delightfully fresh Chardonnay from the talented Melissa Stackhouse, who just completed her third vintage at J. When she joined the winery in 2011, its Chardonnay program was in a state of transition, with many new clones coming online in the estate vineyards. She decided to take the wines in a more restrained, mineral- driven direction, with mini- mal intervention in the cellar. This delicious chardonnay proves that she made the right decision. The 2012 Russian River Chardonnay has aromas of pears and soft vanilla, with a mineral note.
