That doesn't surprise Lassen Park Superintendent Darlene Koontz, but what does strike her is the disparity in visitors aged 18-34 compared to those aged 46-65. In the summer of 2012, about 22 per - cent of visitors were 16- to 35-year- olds. Thirty-six percent of visitors were 46 to 65. In the winter of 2013, 19 percent were 16 to 35, and 41 per - cent were 46 to 65. "I knew that was happening but I didn't realize the numbers of it," Koontz said. "That we're not con - necting with that age group." By dan reidel dreidel@chicoer.com @dan_reidel on Twitter orland » Nine people died in a crash on Interstate 5 north of Highway 32, in which a semi-truck collided with a tour bus about 5:40 p.m. Thursday, and both caught on fire. The bus was carrying students from several Los Angeles-area high schools to visit Humboldt State University for its spring pre - view day for prospective students on Saturday. It's unknown how many of the dead are students. An information line for parents only was established at (707) 826-6327. As many as 10 ground am - bulances and four helicop- ters were sent to the area to evacuate the injured. Authorities at the scene said 32 people were transported to hospitals. There were 46 students in the tour bus. A nursing supervisor at Enloe Medical Center in Chico said five have been transported there as of 9:15 p.m. and the staff was expecting five more. Of the patients currently there, she said one was in critical condition, two were in fair condition and two were undetermined. Interstate 5 was closed. Northbound traffic was being diverted at Highway 32; southbound at Road 7. The closure is expected to be in effect until 7 a.m. today, according to the California High - way Patrol. According to CHP officer Tracy Hoover, the accident happened in the northbound lanes. A FexEx truck with two trailers was trav- eling southbound when it crossed over the center divider and hit the bus head-on, Hoover said. Both the truck and the bus burned. A witness reported victims were being moved to the south- bound lanes for what appeared to be triage. A Nissan sedan was also involved in the accident and damaged, but police at the scene were unsure how. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Veter - ans Memorial Hall in Orland, where volunteers have turned out in droves. At least 20 people are coming in and out with food, wa- ter and clothing. Medics are treating some with minor injuries. On Thursday one of those girls, Shelby Fitzgerald, was honored as part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week. While the timing was coinciden - tal, the spirit Fitzgerald showed in bringing her perpetrator to jus- tice was the perfect example of the types of people the Tehama County District Attorney's Office recognized at the celebration. Victim and Witness Advocate Jeff Eldred described Fitzgerald as going from being a victim to victorious. Eldred said his office dealt with more than 700 victims last year. The decision regarding who to honor wasn't taken lightly.
