About 500 cowboys and cowgirls will stream in from across the nation to Red Bluff April 18-20 for the 93rd annual Round-Up Ro - deo, but a handful of them won't have far to travel. The Round-Up always boasts some hometown fa - vorite cowboys and cow- girls, and Justin Davis, who grew up in Anderson and Cottonwood, is one of them. A team roper by trade, Davis is the son of Jeff and Terri Davis of Four Star Rodeo in Cottonwood. Even though his father rode bulls, Justin was destined to rope. "My mom's brother, my mom's brother-in-law, my whole family ropes," he said. "I didn't have a choice. And my mom wouldn't let me get on bulls." Most importantly, his grandfather ropes. "My mom's dad is 79 and still ropes every single day," Davis said. "He lives and dies for it, and that's how I became a team roper." As a kid, the family lived next to his grandfather in Anderson and they roped every day. When Davis was 11, they moved to Cotton - wood, so he couldn't walk across the yard to rope with Grandpa, but still went to Anderson often. Davis was homeschooled, which gave him the time and flexibility to rope. When he was 18, he headed to Texas and the big winter rodeos. "I got my butt kicked," Davis said, "but it was a good learning experience." Roping is the way Da - vis has made his living. He qualified for the Wran- gler National Finals Ro- deo in 2009, but since then has chosen to stay closer to home and not rope as hard. He's also had issues with keeping horses healthy, which has kept him from re - turning to the finals. Leslie Gordon Smith, 68, of El Sobrante was con - victed by a Tehama County jury in February to five felony counts of child molestation, and had previ- ously been convicted of molesting minors in 1992 and 2007, according to information released by the District Attorney's Office. Smith testified at his jury trial that he knew the then-5-year-old girls he was convicted of molest - ing but denied accusations engaging sexually with them, according a Daily News article in February. The shooter, who has not been located, is believed to have fired shots from a moving vehicle described as possibly a BMW or Honda that is older, "boxy," and white, Sgt. Jeremiah Fears said. The intended victim, Cesar Macedo, took cover behind his SUV in an alleyway behind his home south of Solano Street. Macedo's vehicle was struck four times by bul - lets, police said, and four to six spent .40 caliber shell casings were recovered at the scene. Officers responded to a call of shots fired about 9:30 p.m., and witnesses provided a description of the shooter's vehicle, police said. The vehicle was last seen eastbound from the scene, but a search of the area yielded nothing. Police are investigating the shooting as an at - tempted murder but so far have little to release regarding any suspects. Fears said he had no information regarding the sex, race, or gender of the alleged shooter, and it's unknown how many people, if any, were in the ve - hicle with the shooter at the time.
