Red Bluff Daily News Wednesday, April 13, 2011 Page 5 Carnival heads back to downtown By TANG LOR DN Staff Writer While there will be plenty of things to attract visitors to downtown Red Bluff during the 11 Days of Round-Up celebration, a car- nival could be the main draw. A carnival has been a longtime tradition held in conjunction with the rodeo. In the past, the carnival was held downtown, but more recently it has been at the Tehama District Fairground, where the three-day rodeo takes place. The hubbub of carnival rides will return to downtown this year thanks in part to the team- work of the city and community and business leaders, said Dave Gowan, CEO of the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Com- merce. “We were excited that the City Council unanimously voted for the carnival to come downtown,” Gowan said. “It hasn’t been in (downtown) Red Bluff for a number of years.” Hickory Street between Washington and Main streets will be closed April 14 through April 17 for the carnival. Organizer John Growney worked closely with city staff to get the carnival and two other events into downtown. The council approved two of the three downtown events. Astreet dance was held as part of the open- ing weekend festivities while a horse parade will have to wait until next year. Growney thanked the council for its coop- eration. “I can feel this town coming together,” Growney said. Fairground CEO Mark Eidman said mov- ing the carnival downtown would set the fair- ground back about $2,500 in revenue, but agreed with Growney and other organizers that the move would best benefit the entire community. The upside of more visitors in downtown could mean more revenues overall, organizers said. Downtown businesses will benefit from having the carnival rides just beyond their doorsteps. “Were excited to see kids and families and visitors to come downtown, have fun at the carnival, visit the shops, meet business own- ers, eat at the restaurants and just have a good time in downtown Red Bluff during the whole Round-Up rodeo event,” Gowan said.
