Red Bluff Daily News barrel racing
Barrel racing is just that — a race against time in a cloverleaf patter around three barrels set up in the arena. A rider can choose to begin the cloverleaf pattern to the right or left. The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line. Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second, making every fraction of a second count. Each tipped- over barrel adds a five-second penalty to the time. Although barrel racing is one of seven events common to most PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, it is administered the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

On the second to last run of the 2010 Round-Up Jill Moody turned in a 17.21-second run to grab the buckle with a com- bined time of 35.03 sec- onds. The Letcher, S.D. cowgirl went on to qualify for the 2010 National Finals Rodeo. Cotton- wood’s Nellie Williams placed fourth at the 2010 Red Bluff Round-Up.
Sherry Cervi won her third world title in 2010. From Morana, Ariz., Cervi has amassed more earnings than any other barrel racer — sur- passing the $2 million mark in Dec. 2010. Cervi’s NFR appearance was the 12th of her career. Nellie Williams made her first appear- ance last year.
A strong start to 2011
has Brittany Pozzi eye- ing a third world title. Pozzi leads the world rankings with $73,362. She has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo seven times including in 2010. From Victoria, Texas, Pozzi won the 2007 Red Bluff Round-Up.
