By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter Red Bluff » A group of volunteers is planning to meet Saturday to recon- struct a once-used trail along the Sac- ramento River south of the Red Bluff Recreation Area boat launch. Tehama County Trails and Open Space Coordinator Alan Abbs said vol - unteers will be removing overgrown grass and downed trees on the Syca- more Boat Launch Trail. The trail section, about a half-mile- long hasn't been worked on in about a decade. The trail will start at the boat launch and head downstream along the river for about a half a mile be - fore connecting back to an old service road that brings travelers back to the boat launch or to other trails near the pond and group camp area. Abbs said he has been working with the US Forest Service for about six to nine months to receive approval for the project. As it stands right now the trail is unusable and not marked. Abbs said while creating new trails in the county is nice, there's something to be said for volunteers getting to - gether to maintain the historic trails the area once had. This will be the second largest project Abbs has directed since be - ing named Trails Coordinator in No- vember 2012. Previously Abbs has worked to re- open and keep maintained the trails at Dog Island Park. On the trail horizon, Abbs points to an upcoming Bureau of Land Manage - ment resource management plan that will examine the existing trail system north of Red Bluff and ways it can be better served or maintained. He said the planning process will be a good opportunity to look to the fu - ture. That BLM land, Abbs said, is one of the best aspects of Tehama Coun- ty's existing trail system. "The BLM area is great - especially if you want to get out in the back coun- try. There are parts of that BLM area where you can get away from people for the entire day if you want to," Abbs said. Tehama's trail system is lacking, Abbs said, in connectivity between trails. "The challenge that our trail sys - tem has is just being able to do connec- tions so that people can, all around the county, have something that is acces- sible to them - to where they can use RecReation Sycamore Boat Launch traiL to Be redone All ages welcome to help with park reconstruction By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com coRninG » Three people were held at gun point, one eventually arrested Wednesday, when they were found to be sitting inside of a stolen vehicle at Woodson Bridge State Park. Geneva Sheri Dalton, 29, Red Bluff was arrested for felony vehicle theft and second degree burglary. A 22-year-old Corning man had earlier reported his 1995 white Ford Explorer had been stolen from the 1900 block of Butte Street, a Corning Police De - partment press release said. An investigation determined Dalton had been staying at the man's residence in recent days. Along with the keys to the Explorer she took miscellaneous personal items. A Tehama County Sheriff's deputy located the stolen vehicle at 4:26 p.m. Wednesday at Woodson Bridge State Park, where he detained three sub - jects at gun point. Dalton was arrested and booked at Tehama County Jail. Her bail was $30,000, but she was released on her own recognizance. cRime Three held at gunpoint sitting in stolen car By Robert Jablon Associated Press LOS ANGELES — Cali- fornia's drought won't dry up the economy, but it may slow job growth margin- ally if it persists over sev- eral years, according to a forecast released Wednes- day that stresses the state's thirsty history. Californians, like their native plants, have adapted to periodic droughts, with major ones recorded in 1864-65, 1928-35, 1947-50, 1976-77 and 1987-92, accord - ing to the UCLA Anderson Forecast. "The fact is, aridity and recurrent drought, if ex - pected or normal, are not a detriment to economic growth. Arid states in the U.S. over the past decade have not performed worse than their wetter brethren," said a section of the report by Anderson Senior Econ - omist Jerry Nickelsburg. "Agriculture, industry, fish- eries and households are not passive players in this game but react to drought-based incentives." For instance, thanks to conservation, Southern Cal - ifornia isn't using any more water than the region did more than 20 years ago, de- spite tremendous population growth, Nickelsburg said. While uCLa economists see no significant impact to the state's overall economy from the drought, local industries like agriculture and recreation centered on the shrinking lake will definitely feel the impact. Staff report Plans are well underway for the 29th Annual Red Bluff Round-Up Chili Cook Off Saturday, April 12 in downtown Red Bluff. Hosted by Red Bluff Rotary, this year's special Rodeo Week kick off event will feature numerous local area businesses, service organizations and non-profits facing off in the People's Choice Com - petition. This group will begin serving chili to the public beginning at 11:30 a.m. A $5 tasting cup will allow sampling of more than 25 different chili recipes. Once event goers have made the rounds, they get to vote on their fa - vorite. The business or organization with the most votes at the end of the competition will receive a handful of prizes and bragging rights. In addition to the local cook off, this event serves as an International Chili Society (ICS) Regional Event. Attendees can stand back and watch as com - petitive cooks vie for a qualifying position in the ICS. The cook off offers up more than chili. Pine and Washington streets will be packed with vendors, a classic car show, live entertainment and a beer garden. The event runs until 4 p.m. and all money raised goes toward local scholarships. Local area businesses or service organizations are encouraged to join in the People's Choice com - petition. Send an email to Travis Dolling at tra- vis@dollinginsurance.com for more information.
