SOCCER Pleasant Valley 1 Red Bluff 0 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor Despite a strong performance from the Lady Spartans defense, Pleasant Valley found enough space in the 73rd minute, Friday night, to grab the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 Vikings win. It was a valiant effort against a Vikings team that improved to 10-1-3 on the season and had already beaten Red Bluff 3-0 this year. Just a minute before the goal, Red Bluff had almost found the back of the net themselves, when Lexi Nanfito hit the crossbar from 20 yards out. It was one of the Spartans’ few scor- ing chances in the second half. But while Pleasant Valley main- tained possession for the final 40 min- utes, Red Bluff’s back line of Rachel Ward, Nicole Mitchell, Erin Fennel and Breanna Groom stood tall. Red Bluff controlled play better in the first half and Jill Bilodeaux and Alex Levindofske combined on a nice combination that resulted in a cross hit- ting the post in the 11th minute. Junior Giants meet real Giants dan Hawkins and took a 5-0 loss. Hawkins struck out the first nine batters she faced and recorded 17 strikeouts for the game. McColpin and Emily McEnaney had the lone Red Bluff hits. Red Bluff plays Paradise at 9 a.m., Saturday. TENNIS Oroville 3 Red Bluff 6 Red Bluff’s strong singles play led the Spartans to a 6-3 win over Oroville, Thursday. Thunder Shaffer avenged an earlier loss by winning a marathon 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 match over Steven Vang in No. 1 sin- gles action. Red Bluff won 5-of-6 singles matches to claim the meet before doubles started. Cody Yarbrough defeated Cheng Yang 6-3, 6-2. C.J. Varner knocked off Sai Thao 6-4, 6-4. Paul Hendricks beat John Xiong 6-4, 6-2 and Arthur Ger- mano defeated James Moua 6-3, 6-0. Germano and Aaron Vasey had the lone Red Bluff win in doubles, defeating Moua and Sephen Cordiero 10-4. Red Bluff improved to 5-2 on the season. Yreka 5 Corning 4 Corning lost a heartbreaker to Yreka , Friday, falling 5-4 in a meet tied throughout the day. The schools split singles play 3-3. Corning then won a doubles match. Yreka countered with a doubles win. Singles winners were: Ryan Howell defeating Austin Kische 6-4, 7-6; Erik Espinoza knocking off Noah Lawson 6-0, 4-6, 11-9 and Robert Garcia over Jared Larsen 6-4, 7-5. Special to the DN “Play ball” usually signals the start of America’s pastime, but for six Los Molinos kids, it meant an opportunity of a lifetime. On March 29th, the Giants Com- munity Fund hosted the Play Ball Luncheon, one of its largest annual fundraisers, at Pier 48 in San Francis- co. Giants team members and coaches signed autographs, took pictures and ate lunch with fans. The money raised, over $450,000 this year, sup- ports Giants Community Fund pro- jects including the Junior Giants pro- gram, a noncompetitive summer base- ball league, in 85 communities throughout California, southern Ore- gon, and western Nevada. Six Junior Giants players from Los Molinos, James Chrasta, Alicia Flo- res, Moses Flores, Dylan Hausman, Ayden Vance and Kendall Williams, were selected to attend this event. Not only did they get autographs, each kid escorted a Giants player into the banquet and sat with that player during lunch. “It was awesome [to escort a play- er] because I felt like I was on the red carpet, but it was an orange carpet,” said Moses, who escorted outfielder Pat Burrell. Kathy Hausman, commissioner of the Los Molinos Junior Giants league, was inducted into the Junior Giants Hall of Fame at the 2010 Play Ball Luncheon. A benefit of this was that her league members were among the Junior Giants players selected to escort members of the 2011 San Fran- Courtesy photo James Chrasta has his photo taken with Freddy Sanchez. cisco Giants team. “I didn’t realize it was going to be all those people,” said Alicia, who escorted relief pitcher Santiago Casil- la. “I thought it would be just us.” Dylan Hausman attended the lunch last year when his mom won her award. This year was better because last year he didn’t get to sit with an actual Giants player. “We talked about positions I played in little league. He [Ryan Vogelsong] is a pitcher, too,” Haus- man said. “It was amazing meeting a Giants player,” said Vance, who walked in with catcher Chris Stewart. Chrasta, who escorted 2010 National League Championship Series MVP Cody Ross, was one of four Junior Giants selected to read a question for a Giants player in front of a crowd of over 1,600 people. Jeremy Affeldt, relief pitcher, answered the question. After the long trip home, some watched the Giants play the A’s on television. “It was pretty cool because we just met them and then we see them on tv,” said Williams. Her player escort, pitcher Barry Zito, started the game against Oakland that night. It was a day filled with baseball fantasies, but what part of the day would they remember most? “Everything,” said Chrasta. Shasta blasted the Spartans 10-0, Friday night, in a game called after six innings due to the Mercy rule. “We didn’t play bad,” Red Bluff coach Joe Gallaty said. “It was their day — they were going to win one way or another.” A pair of inning ending double plays hurt Red Bluff, who dropped to 13-3 on the season, with two of those losses com- ing against the Wolves.
