2 The Oracle W hen Scott Fuson '82 came to Little 500 weekend at Alpha- Omicron Zeta in 1979, he instantly sensed that the members had something that was collectively bigger than themselves. After meeting the Chapter's leadership, Scott saw that the character and quality of brothers were something he wanted to be a part of. More than 30 years later, Scott still sees the same character and quality in those men that keep him engaged in the brotherhood. As an undergraduate, Scott's sense of pride from being a member of Lambda Chi grew from intramurals, grade point average, and pairing with sororities for major events. "I can recall one time at an Interfraternity Council awards banquet bringing home six trophies for the semester. The year before I came to the Chapter, there were roughly 50 guys in the Chapter. The year I graduated, there were 125. We were very proud of that growth," Scott shared. The mentoring from senior members and the offices he held in the Chapter and through IFC had a significant impact on Scott's professional development and leadership skills. "The advice from men from diverse backgrounds helped me grow both personally and professionally," he said. Besides growing professionally, the friendships and memories that Scott gained while an undergraduate in Lambda Chi have lasted him for years. "There are too many stories to tell, and decorum prevents their telling! Some of my fondest memories are celebrating the 1981 National Basketball Championship at Showalter Fountain, traveling to New Orleans with several brothers to attend the Final Four, and witnessing another National Championship. If there is Heaven on Earth, that would be celebrating a national championship with your fraternity brothers," Scott said. After graduating from the Kelley School of Business with a marketing degree, Scott began a career in sales out of the New York offices of Dow Corning Corporation in electronics and aerospace markets. He became involved with the company while Dow Corning was recruiting at IU and he received a job through the placement office. Scott recently retired after 31 years of service to the company. His most recent positions in the company were corporate vice president of marketing and sales, vice president of global life science business, and president of south-east Asia office. Alumnus Scott Fuson '82 Sees a Bright Future for Alpha-Omicron Zeta Scott and his wife, Suzanne, moved to Bloomington in April 2013. He is very happy with the changes and upgrades the Chapter has made in both the house and members. "From a facilities standpoint, the recent upgrade to the house is outstanding—it's the best the Chapter House has looked. They recently initiated close to 30 new members, and the quality of the young men appears to be very high. The vibe and the momentum are strong, and the future looks bright," Scott said. "I've had a chance to speak at a recruitment event, attend initiation, and recently spent some time with the High Rho discussing a legacy event for this upcoming Homecoming. I would encourage alumni to attend Homecoming. The men in the Chapter take great care of the alumni, and it is a great opportunity to get connected again." Staying connected in the Bloomington community and with Alpha- Omicron Zeta has been a great experience for Scott. "I am very fortunate to have been in the Chapter with men of such quality and high character. We've gone through many of life's milestones together like marriage, children, and deaths, and I find it all very humbling and a privilege." You can contact Scott at sfuson@centurytel.net. Founded in 1951 by Howdy Wilcox Jr., executive director of the Indiana University Student Foundation, who modeled the race after the Indianapolis 500, it is regarded as "the world's greatest college weekend." This year, our brothers in Bloomington have been training diligently since the fall, are competing in the collegiate race season for the Indiana University Cycling Club, and are among the top runners for the 2014 Little 500. With a large team of 10 dedicated riders, they have pushed their acquired budget to its brink and are in need of our support to train to their full potential and present young riders on the team with memorable experiences to aid in transforming them to future leaders.
