Alumni Association and House Corporation Consolidate Boards O n February 17, Dennis McCall '84, Phil Holst of F&H, Tom Williamson '72, and I had dinner at Mother Bears with the Gamma Executive Council. It was great to be able to spend quality time getting to know the undergraduates better. The following morning, Phil and I met with them again to discuss their recent annual review with nationals and to ensure they were making progress on the outstanding issues. During our discussion it became clear that we have an incredible chapter and we need to ensure that our alumni are aware of all the really good things that are going on. We decided on two things: 1. we would share some of their work in this newsletter that you are reading, and 2. we would formally place a stake in the ground to win the SAE Zeal Award for the best chapter! Please read further for some of the highlights: • Over the last two semesters Gamma has finished second and fifth in all-fraternity GPA. • By end of the year the chapter will have performed over 2,000 hours of community service. That's 20 man hours a year! • The chapter is one of the few fraternities on campus to utilize a mentor program to help our collegians transition through the different stages of their undergraduate lives. Read more on page 3. • Dennis McCall '84, Jeff Hoffman '73, and the undergraduate chapter are working with the Arbutus to obtain prints of our composites. The plan is to place 8x10 photos into a "composite" made up of each decade since the inception of the chapter in 1907. We think this will help our alumni feel like the new Gamma is their home too. Our goal is to get some of these composites hung prior to Little 500. • We hope you have noticed that our brand messaging has been updated. Brandon Bennett '10 has worked diligently with the chapter to clean up our websites and social media. Our plan is to direct everyone to the same website, providing different tabs for each of our perspective audiences: undergraduates, alumni, parents, and prospective new members. Please visit the website at www.saeinga.com. Feedback is a gift, so please feel free to contact Brandon at bcbennett87@gmail.com. • To provide annual updates on the chapter accomplishments, the undergraduates are cleaning up the contact list. I continue to be extremely impressed with the fact that the undergraduates are self-governing; making the tough calls and dealing with all discipline issues in a timely and consistent manner, they truly are their "Brother's Keeper." With that, we must remind everyone that hazing is illegal. Hazing is also defined much differently today than when we were in school, so please be cognizant of this when visiting the house; we can't afford to put the undergraduate chapter at risk. Lastly, I would like to thank the previous Housing Corporation members for their leadership in getting the chapter back on campus and for working with F&H to get the house built. We would not have the facility we now call Gamma without their efforts. Thank you, David Gray '72, Doug Cassman '72, Jeff Hoffman '73, Dan Wunderlin '82, and Mike Wells '72! As alumni we have a responsibility to provide leadership, mentoring, and brotherhood to the chapter. Please make every effort, when you are in Bloomington, to stop by the house and spend time with the brothers. In my experience, you will be greeted with a strong grip and a smile. Looking forward to seeing you at Little 500! Phi Alpha, Steve Mitchell '83 President House Corporation/Alumni Association sm2824@att.com The Indiana Gram Indiana Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon • Indiana University B y a nearly unanimous vote, the Indiana Gamma Alumni Association Board of Directors aligned the leadership of the Alumni Association with that of the House Corporation. Both entities will continue to exist; the shared leadership will provide a unified voice and a single point of contact for alumni. This change was made effective March 1. In the past four years, the INGA AA has reconnected Gamma alumni through the sponsorship of various social events including: the Golf Outing, Little 500 tent, and Homecoming tailgate. In 2011, under the leadership of Steve Mitchell '83, the Alumni Association launched an active mentoring program with the objective of increasing alumni presence within the chapter while providing guidance to its membership. The INGA AA also supports the chapter by offering Leadership School scholarships to deserving candidates. Improved alumni communications are also a focal point for the INGA AA. Since nearly its inception, the following tools have been used by the INGA AA to communicate to Indiana Gamma alumni: ConstantContact, LinkedIn, Flikr, Shutterfly, and Gmail. These tools allow us to communicate with brothers more frequently and provide an avenue for brothers to connect. A unified alumni base has always been the objective of the INGA AA. In its inaugural meeting, Dennis McCall '84 was nominated and agreed to serve as the liaison between the Alumni Association and the House Corporation. Members of the INGA AA have actively supported the Rising from the Ashes capital campaign. An active, supportive, and involved alumni base is critical for the continued success of the chapter. Looking back on the past four years, I think we've accomplished a great deal. Many thanks to all those who helped get the INGA AA off the ground. It wasn't perfect but sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Phi Alpha, Dan "Disco" Wunderlin '82 Update from alUmni leadership
