Riley Baugus was born in 1965 in North Carolina. He grew up in the regular baptist tradition which gave him a solid foundation in unaccompanied singing. He sang on the sound track to the 2003 fi lm “Cold Mountain”. He began playing fi ddle at the age of 10 and grew up with the fi ddler Kirk Sutphin. As a youth he also had the opportunity to study with such eminent old time musicians from Surry County, North Carolina and Grayson County, Virginia. He is very much infl uenced by the Round Peak style of Surry County, North Carolina. Prior to his discovery and success, he worked for 18 years as a welder and blacksmith before turning professional. He has performed throughout the United states as well as in Canada, Ireland, Scotland and England. He has played with several old time string bands. He has recorded with several individuals and bands and has also taught banjo. He is recognized as one of the best in the world. If you ever have an opportunity to hear him, don’t miss it!
