We questioned if we could get the house prepared for men to live in with just a summer for repairs. Then the guy told us he had already bought the house!" It is the same chapter house that Iowa Gamma owns today. The process of buying a new house involved some fundraising. Bill wasn't the campaign chairman, but he still made a call to an alumnus that got the chapter $100,000. "I remember he told me that he would invite me to lunch if he hadn't already had plans with his friend, Warren. It was only later that I realized he was talking about Warren Buffet," Bill laughed. "And that was as close as I got to ever having lunch with Warren Buffett." Volunteers and advisors provide essential alumni support to fraternities. In this crucial time for Iowa Delta, Bill encourages alumni to reconnect with the chapter. "Well, there are two types of alumni. Some consider the Fraternity a life membership; others think that it ends after graduation. Get involved with an alumni club. Brothers have attributes that have value to the chapter," Bill says. Today, Bill lives in a retirement community in Des Moines, Iowa. He has been married to his wife, Elizabeth, for 41 years. I am one of the brothers who was busted in the raid. I remember it as if it were yesterday. You have to remember the Phi Delts were the joke of Sweetheart Sing for years. We always came in last. Within the house, no one wanted the job of organizing the chapter for Sweetheart Sing. The brothers didn't take it seriously and just goofed off during practice. As I recall, Jim Dock '67 (#113) was in charge that year, and he did a great job of whipping us into shape. We added some non-traditional songs to our regular repertoire (maybe some English drinking songs?), which the brothers really embraced. I remember practicing a lot; we must have had some sort of professional tutoring. Anyway, we got on stage and sang a pretty original program and when we finished there was dead silence; the audience was STUNNED at how well we performed—then tumultuous applause. Having NEVER heard that before, we required some adult beverages. Well, being wintertime, a keg in the woods was out of the question; we needed to find someplace indoors. It seems to me that the social chairman knew a guy with a place we could use. So we ended up in this somewhat seedy house, hang- ing out in the living room, with two kegs in the kitchen—PBR, the beverage of choice of Iowa Delta back then. Soon we started singing our program and, of course, tipping a few. In a little while, women came downstairs and we figured out what the "venue" was. Soon, we had them in tears and they really took to us—in a pure- ly platonic sense. The police arrived and off we went to jail. Naturally, we serenaded the jail, which might have speeded up the bonding-out process. Regarding the room above the garage behind the chapter house, this was called the "Blue Room"—as in Pabst Blue Ribbon! There were several of us—Gary Brown '68 (#164), Tom Prybyl '68 (#139), Jack Brown '67 (#126), and others—who used the room as a hang out on Friday afternoons, after class but before din- ner. We had some ratty old couches up there; too ratty even for the Phi Delt house itself. We would get a 12-pack of PBR and 5-10 of us would hang out. Our little club had a strict "no girls" plicy for these get-togethers. As for Jack Fletcher's story, I suppose someone else might have had other uses for the room at different times! The "Fletcher Files" article in the last newsletter generated a very interesting response. Here are some memories of a Phi who lived through some of the events Jack mentioned. Looking for a Few Good Men W ith recolonization beginning this fall, we need to know of any potential new members to join our Fraternity. We rely on our alumni to make recommendations for those who they think would uphold our Phi Delta Theta ideals. If you know of a potential new member that will attend Drake next fall, or even in the next few years, send his name and information to Tim Coonan '96 at tconan@iowarec.org. Save the Date The 2014 Drake Relays will be held Monday, April 21, through Sunday, April 27. Visit www.drakerelays.org for more information. T he annual Phi Delt holiday brunch was held January 11, at Americana Restaurant in Des Moines. Thank you, Scott Carlson '93 (#667), for once again opening your restaurant and amazing brunch buffet to host this event! This was a great opportunity for brothers to get together and catch up. Also, we provided updates on the progress of recolonization of the chapter. Phis Reconnect at Holiday Brunch
