E-mail: mjmonro@verizon.net G oing through rush in 1981 at 18 years old, with no legacy connection to a fraternity, Chris Schaller '85 was new to the fraternity scene and a bit overwhelmed by college. Sigma Nu was acknowledged for its strength in campus leadership, academics, and how to have fun. Chris said from there the choice became simple. Contributing to that brotherhood through the next four years helped develop Chris into who he is today—business man, Sigma Nu alumnus, and loving father. After receiving an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in business administration—finance, marketing, and organizational behavior in 1985, Chris went to work for a Fortune 500 company. Just after earning his seven-year retirement tenure, Chris decided to leave the company. Drawing on the leadership and sense of confidence he'd gained at the University of Southern California and as a Sigma Nu, he started a business where those corporate decisions were more quickly and competently addressed. Chris said his time at Sigma Nu "reinforced capability and confidence that I could accomplish whatever it was I wanted." This confidence helped Chris grow that company, Comade Inc., into a middle- market business distributing wholesale products, materials and equipment to prison industries and departments of transportation nationwide. W h e n l o o k i n g b a c k o n h i s t i m e a s a n undergraduate, Chris said it was the people in the Chapter who made the most lasting impression on him: "The array of personalities, some completely different, but all rowing in the same direction: studious, serious, comedic, and to Animal House – Blutto. As a community we all blended together well and had an entire spectrum of stories to share." Today Chris stays in contact with those same people who convinced him that Sigma Nu was the place for him. He volunteered for the housing corporation for a few years after graduation. In 1996, Chris rekindled a budding alumni tradition and began hosting the USC Sigma Nu "Old Man" alumni golf tournament. "It's a great opportunity to stay in touch with friends, and years later, the golf tournament is still going strong." Chris has also stayed in contact with his brothers thanks to pledge class reunions, and he is planning another for 2016 (35 years). He and his pledge class roommates get together every couple of years for golf and activities in the Phoenix area. They also have an annual alumni Christmas shopping extravaganza. "The excuse is shopping for significant others, wives or girlfriends; the result has traditionally been an evening of cocktails." Chris and his wife, Diane, live in Orange, California, with their two children, daughter Devon and son Jackson. In his free time he enjoys playing basketball, traveling, spending time with friends, and horseback riding.
