32 www.DesertMessenger.com March 5, 2014 Bette Lu Helland Bette Lu Helland, 78, died in Quartzsite Arizona on February 4th, 2014, leav- ing a legacy of grace and style. A celebration of her life will be held in Duluth, Minnesota, her permanent residence for over 50 years. A full time mother for over 20 years, she sewed costumes, attended concerts and games, nursed, fed and raised her children. She later attended the Duluth Business University and worked a full career administering social programs for the City of Duluth until she retired. She loved to read everything from historical biographies and novels to weekly gossip magazines. She was impossible to beat at Scrabble, or at any other word or spelling game. She loved to play cards, and was a familiar face at the Evergreen Senior Center where she was a member of several weekly bridge and In Memoriam Across from McDonald's • Quartzsite NEED CASH? Jim Buys OLD Fountain Pens, Watches Coins, Paper Money Famous Autographs cribbage clubs. She enjoyed traveling, and spent the last several winters in Arizona. She will be remembered fondly as an intelligent but humble woman, cou- rageous but gentle, independent but loyal. She loved unconditionally, and she was loved in return by family and friends too numerous to count. She is survived by three of her five sisters, Jean Harteloo, Janette Fox, and Polly Irvin-Pizzi, five children, Larry Thompson, Diane Nelson and her husband Joseph, Bonnie McEwan and her husband Scott, Sandi DeMars and her husband Rick, Randy Hel- land, many grandchildren and great children, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends, including longtime companion Dutch Rounsville. Friends are invited to a memorial service and reception at Evergreen Se- nior Center, 5830 Grand Ave, Duluth, MN on May 3rd from 1:00 to 3:00. In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in Bette's name may be directed to Evergreen Senior Center. Quartzsite Transit Services Available to our elderly, elderly disabled and disabled populations Our hours of operation are 8:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Pickups will begin at 8:20am; scheduling may be done two weeks in advance. An adult must accompany riders under 10 years of age.
