A Publication of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi The Zeta Phi WinTer 2014 Zeta Phi honors Founders by sustaining strong rePutation MeMbers Achieve highest gPA, host sociAl events W ith the conclusion of the fall semester, the Zeta Phi Chapter has proven that its active members are dedicated to maintaining the strong reputation begun by those who came before. The active chapter has once again achieved the highest average GPA among all fraternities at MU, with this fall's pledge class successfully attaining the highest GPA of new members among all university fraternities. Zeta Phi also utilized its time to host a fall philanthropic event, the Beta Bowl. This event allowed for the women of local sororities to compete in a flag football tournament that benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Central Missouri through t-shirt sales and tournament entry fees. The fall semester wasn't just all work though. Throughout the semester Zeta Phi hosted multiple social events, including the traditional Wooglin Country Club social and the Wooglin Night Club formal in Chicago. More events are currently being planned for the spring semester, with initiation kicking things off in January. As my time as chapter president and an active member draws to a close, I think back to all of the bonds that have been created, the lessons that have been learned, and the good times that have been had. I would once again like to say thank you for your continued support in ensuring that young men are granted the opportunity to participate in an environment and lifestyle of learning that truly is invaluable. Yours in _kai_, John P. Miller '14 Outgoing Chapter President Zeta Phi brothers John Miller '14 and Garrett Bakke '14 accept the 26th Sisson Award on behalf of the Chapter at the 174th General Convention. b oth the chapter and House Corporation maintain a strong financial position after solid fiscal years, which ended June 30, 2013. The House Corporation continued to pay down debt with both operating cash flow and collection of pledges to the building fund. The debt as of December 31, 2013, was $5,610,394, which was about $850,000 less than it was on December 31, 2012. The House Corporation requested and received a $90,000 grant from the Zeta Phi Society Foundation to help cover operating expenses allocated to the educational space in the new chapter house. The amount of unpaid pledges at year's end that were due in 2013 was fairly small, but we are following up on those items. We have now collected almost 90% of all the amounts pledged and this is remarkable so early in the process. While collections have been good, it is important that we continue to have strong collections as the principal payments due on the loan continue to increase over the next couple of years. In addition, most of our larger pledges have been paid, which makes us more dependent on a solid collection rate on the vast majority of our pledges that were under $10,000. In fact, it would be appreciated, if you are in a position to do so, to accelerate payment of your outstanding balance to reduce our interest costs. Our plan, from as early as 2011, is to pay down the debt until maturity in 2018, at which time it will be necessary to refinance the remaining debt which is expected to be in the neighborhood of $4 million. Thank you for your continued support of and loyalty to Zeta Phi. In _kai_, John Hillhouse '69 Zeta Phi Maintains solid Financial Position House Corporation Awarded Grant, Continues to Pay Down Debt
