From the Medical Committee Be Safe With Chicken By Marty Fischer, MD e recent Foster Farms food poisoning epi- demic sent 40% of those affected into the hospital. Symptoms were nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and se- vere abdominal pain. More food poisoning deaths are due to chicken than any other product. Bacteria can live on surfaces for days, not just hours. So how can you lessen your chances of get- ting sick? • Consider all chicken to be contaminated, because nearly all is contaminated by disease- causing organisms, including chicken labeled "organic". In a recent study of chicken breasts, Consumer Reports found half of the samples had a least one multi-drug resistant organism. is means if you have an infection caused by one of these organisms, antibiotics may not work! ey found 10% had more than one variety of multi- drug resistant organisms. • Avoid cross contamination by washing your hands (with soap for 20 seconds or more) after touching chicken. • Do not wash or rinse the chicken as that will spread the germs (up to three feet!). • Have two cutting boards, one for raw meat only. • Use a meat thermometer and cook the chicken to 165˚F. It may also help by buying your chicken at the store last, and getting it into the re- frigerator promptly, to lessen chances for any bacteria to multiply. Kedron Lodge joins Shriners in parade HENDERSONVILLE — On September 3, some 20 brothers of Kedron Lodge 387 and members of the Hendersonville Shrine Club marched together in the North Carolina Apple Festival parade here. While the Shriners are regular participants in the annual parade, this was the first time in memory that Kedron brothers joined them. Both groups carried banners. The blue shirts of Kedron brothers and the red fezzes of the Shriners were well received by a very large crowd of onlookers. — Spence Campbell Berne Lodge hosts sheriffs NEW BERN — Berne 724 honored members of the area Sheriff 's Departments on October 17. Craven County Sheriff Jerry Monette, Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck, and Lenoir County Sheriff Chris Hill all took part in the program. Past Grand Master L. R. "Pete" Thomas was master of ceremo- nies. Craven County Administrative Lt. Lee Thomas gave an overview of the duties and responsibili- ties of their department. He introduced each of the deputies in attendance. Craven County Lt. Mike Bersch (past master of Berne Lodge) introduced featured speaker, Sheriff Jerry Monette, a member of Grantham 725. He paid tribute to all the men who serve in the department and to the Masons of the county who are so supportive of law enforcement. — Pete Thomas Frederick A Bartholdi, a Freemason, designed the Statue of Liberty which stands in New York harbor. The Grand Lodge of New York laid the cornerstone on August 5, 1885.
