We look to the stars to catch up to the latest fashion tips and strive to emulate their looks and, most importantly, their jewelry. The end of 2013 was a period of boldness on the carpet. Platinum statement pieces were the accessory of choice and rich jewel tones, especially emerald, were prominent in both dress and jewelry. Sofia Vergara, for example, accessorized her scarlet dress with platinum, unheated ruby, sapphire and Columbian emerald earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. This fabulous Emmy's look didn't speak to its audience- it demanded to be heard. On the opposite end of the spectrum, 2013 also saw a return to basics. The red carpet at the 85th Annual Academy Awards was embossed with its share of platinum and diamond stud earrings. From Anne Hathaway in Tiffany & Co. to Charlize Theron in Harry Winston, these leading ladies proved that the stud is a staple that will last forever, much like the platinum it is set in. One trend was ubiquitous throughout the entire year: vintage jewelry. Some stars chose authentic pieces from the 20's and 30's and others donned creations inspired by the era; in either instance, the majority chose platinum as a nod to the original vintage jewelry which was crafted in the most precious of metals. For the Oscars, Renee Zellweger adorned her neutral gown with Van Cleef & Arpels double fan clips. The platinum bows, set with rubies and diamonds, date back to 1937. Gwen Stefani also went retro at the "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" Costume Institute Gala in a 1930's Fred Leighton platinum and diamond necklace. Ever in style, the vintage trend is expected to stay.
