p ublisher REFLECTIONS called him “Windy” because he had been everywhere, done everything. We said he had even seen the wind. Maness Adcox was 88 when he died in December. I knew Maness for most of my I life and he was one of the few people who remembered my childhood dog Galumph. He was the epitome of a Christian man and always had a warm smile. Dan Barker was an accountant I knew for about 40 years. We always had a great time reminiscing about a poker hand from a 1980 game at his neighbor Herb Thorp’s house. Dan had a full house in a five card stud game but I had four tens. Dan was so tight with money he never forgot that hand, nor have I. Alston (Al) Cain and I were friends for over 30 years and he and his wife M.G. owned an advertising agency that I used for many years. Al loved golf, beach music and Michelob beer. He died in September on the 18th hole playing golf and I am sure he had a Michelob with him. Nancy Reid O’Connor lived in Fayetteville and Wrightsville Beach for more than 40 years. She was a wonderful, godly lady who introduced me to Reformed Theology seven years ago and made my life better for it. I know I will see her again. Paul Holland was a giant of a man with as big a heart. We were friends for 47 years. His wife was my ninth grade teacher and I was their newspaper boy. I will miss Paul, especially at ACC basketball time. Valentine’s Day This Valentine’s Day I will be thanking God for Sandee, my valentine. We celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary in December. Sandee and I started dating in 1966 and our date nights consisted of driving between local hangouts on Bragg Boulevard like the Hillcrest Drive-In, Pizza Palace, Thad’s and McDonalds. If you had a popular date or a pretty girl and wanted to be seen, that was the route to take. I had a popular girl and a pretty one, too, so that was my route every Friday night after the football game. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, be sure to read the story about unusual marriage proposals in this issue. Issue Change We are changing our schedule of magazine issues starting in April, which will be our Dogwood issue each year. We will end up the year with a November/December issue and a special Food and Wine issue in December instead of the current December/ January issue. We will still have eight issues each year, just coming in different months than past years. I hope you have blessed 2011.CV t’s a new year now and last year many people who created fond memories for me passed from this world. When a person is over 60 like me, these memories become even more important. Here are some of the memorable people we all lost last year: Paul Snell was a great story teller who loved to laugh and tell jokes. We 12 | Feb/March • 2011
