MARCH 8TH www.TheGrandGathering.com January 1, 2014 Tickets available now for Paul Winer show By Joanne Winer Tickets are now on sale for the Paul Winer and Friends show at the Q.I.A. on January 28, 2014. Paul, owner of Reader's Oasis Bookstore, has been playing to sold out crowds for the past 3 Januarys at the Q.I.A., and still holds the record for the most people at a concert in the hall there. This year, there will again be two shows, one at 2:00 p.m. and another at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Q.I.A. office, or at the bookstore, and will also be available at the ticket booth outside the hall just before the shows. Paul has never done two shows the same, and this January's shows will be something new as well. Along with his great boogie-woogie blues and comedy, which he does in all his shows, he will be sharing the stage again with some familiar faces from last year, but much new material has been added to the shows as well as some of the same songs as he has played in the past years. You never know what to expect when you get there, and even the evening show will be a little different from the afternoon show!!! Accompanying Paul again this year will be a great lineup--Ralph Martin will be there playing his one string wash tub bass--most people in town know Ralph, who has played for 30 years, and who also puts on a weekly gospel show in town over the winter. He has been playing with Paul for several years now, not just at the Q.I.A. shows, but in many of the RV parks in and around Quartzsite, as well as concerts in Blythe at the new Arts Center at the Palo Verde College and the Blues Festival. He has also played at the annual Spaghetti dinner and Party in the Park for Celia's Rainbow Gardens for many years. Also in the lineup will be well known country musician Jerry Mullins, who has also been playing the Q.I.A. shows with Paul, as well as many years of playing at the Celias' events, with Barefoot and Boots band, and they play in many RV parks and venues in and around Quartzsite every season. Another guest will be Buddy Apfel, who plays trombone and chest tuba--he plays with Igor's Jazz Cowboys and has for years, doing hot jazz and Texas swing music. A special duet will be done with Paul and 11 year old Morgan Mulac again this season, and she has also sang with Paul in many places over the past few years. Special guest again this year is Will Pirone, Paul's childhood friend and fellow bluesman, who will fly in again from back east for these shows. Will has played with Paul for many years back in the 70s, and is an accomplished musician who has played all over the country, and for many years produced outdoor music festivals in the east. When they play together, it is magic!!! Anyone who loves blues and boogie woogie will love to hear them play piano and harmonica together, and they plan on several medleys of songs they used to do, with Ralph playing bass with them. Be sure to pick up your tickets soon for these two great shows--they have been going fast. For more information you can call the Q.I.A. at 927-6325, or call the bookstore at 927-6551.
