January 1, 2014 33 www.DesertMessenger.com Rotary Doings Contributed By: Violet Kiss Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year to everyone! What does this all mean to you? Whatever or whom we believe in this Holiday Season, for many of us it is a time for reflecting on our individual actions and sharing with others. Some believe in the glass half-empty approach versus the half-full. Full realization may hit you when you see that the glass is always full with something, even if it is "air", smile. In other words and for an old but true saying, "life is what you make it". Can we do better? It's something we can all think about. Catching up with our Rotary, we have elected our new Officers for the coming 2014-2015 year which starts on July 1st: Violet Kiss, President; Steve Schue, Vice President; Sandee Nowak Wall, Treasurer; Ron Jones, Director. We've been talking a lot about our Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) program. We are shooting for this Fall as the launch date. More details will follow. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is on February 15, 2014, namely our 2nd Annual Black and White Dinner at the Black Pearl in Parker. Please save the date! This will benefit both NHN and our scholarships for HS Seniors furthering their education. In addition, we encourage Quartzsite residents obligated to pay state income tax, to join us in making donations to our Quartzsite High School in Salome (qualifies for the Arizona Education Tax Credit). Tell them specifically you want your contributions supporting a high school Rotary Interact Club. Or make a donation at www. trvfa.org for the Rotary Vocational fund of Arizona (qualifies for the Arizona Working Poor Tax Credit). In both cases, you qualify for a dollar for dollar tax CREDIT on your state income tax of up to $400 for a married couple or $200 for an individual. Donate now and get it all back when you file this year's Arizona State taxes. It won't cost you anything, but it will give you a warm feeling knowing you've helped individuals achieve better lives through vocational education or in Quartzsite directly by giving High School students a community service club and in learning the Rotary spirit. 2013 General Plan 2013 General Plan Survey is now available online.
