28 www.DesertMessenger.com LETTERS FROM PAGE 7 gallon per site per day number that was used to determine rates and sizing of the town's needed capacity, the council passed the ordinance to move forward and saddle the town with a tremendous load of debt and a future of upward spiraling sewer rates. As RV parks cap sewer holes in order to survive, the remaining commercial and residential customers will be forced to shoulder climbing rates to close the funding gap. Is it right that a temporary town manager and a group of unelected but appointed council members should have the power to make a move with such a far reaching impact on the future economic viability of our town? As park owners and managers, we thought this issue would be better resolved by sending it to the people with a referendum, putting it up for a vote by the town's citizens. Let the people decide if they are willing to trade the future nature of their town as a snowbird roost for a bigger and better sewer plant. Repairs and maintenance are not argued here, but doubling the size based on arbitrary numbers that bear no resemblance to reality certainly should be. When the park owner association pulled the paperwork at town hall for a referendum, the council and town manager scheduled a special meeting to revote on the measure as an "emergency" to eliminate the opportunity for a referendum. Our town mayor vetoed this attempt to rob the townspeople of a voice on this important issue, and we now await the outcome of legal sparring to see which direction the wind will blow for Quartzsite. Let your council know your feelings at every opportunity, and let's make a wish for Quartzsite... A Prosperous New Year. Shawn Farrish, Quartzsite 10% OFF WITH THIS AD!
