Baseball Foundation Golden Bear News & Notes January 2014 Volume 1, Issue 3 2014 Golden Bears Season Preview David Esquer, Head Coach F all practice concluded on Saturday, November 16, with the team getting ready for final exams. Some of the best news of the fall sessions was the return of several key pitchers and position players to full health. Pitchers Mike Theofanopoulos and Kyle Porter had consistently strong outings on the mound, while Devon Rodriguez, Derek Campbell, Vince Bruno, and Mike Reuvekamp looked sharp in the field and at the plate. With the return of these key players to full strength, the team is improved in every facet of the game over last season. One of the up sides to last year's rash of injuries was that less experienced players like Devin Pearson, Ryan Mason, Dylan Nelson, Trevor Hildenberger, and Nick Halamandaris had to carry bigger loads than anticipated and they performed beyond expectations. One of the most interesting, and important, tasks of the fall practice schedule is the integration of the freshman class into the daily routine of the program. Our freshmen players showed themselves eager to make their own imprint on Cal Baseball, with pitching again a real strength. Be ready to become familiar with such names as Daulton Jeffries, Alex Schick, Alex Martinez, and Andrew Buckley. Some freshmen field players include Robbie Tenerowicz, Lucas Erceg, and Aaron Knapp. All the coaches and players are excited about the 2014 schedule, and we are looking forward to getting back to work after the Holidays. Full practice will resume on Friday, January 24, followed by the third annual First Pitch Dinner, at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Two short weeks later, we will host Fan Fest at Evans Diamond on Sunday, February 9, and the following week, the University of Texas Longhorns come to Cal for a four game series. Opening Night is Friday, February 14, so mark your calendars! Our 2014 schedule is among the toughest in the nation with Texas, Arkansas, Tulane, and Auburn in addition to our relentless Pac 12 schedule that will see UCLA, Oregon State, and Arizona come to Evans Diamond. We hope all Bears fans enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Season and are ready to come out to cheer on this year's squad as we face a very challenging schedule on our way to the post season! See you soon and GO BEARS!! 2014 Season Events at Evans Diamond T he 2014 Golden Bears season will be another fun-filled spring at Evans Diamond!
